New ownership, Scottish guy named Billy (hence Billy's Pub). I don't remember seeing parmesan wings on the menu, but salt & pepper is my go to anyways.

Have you ever been to the beach at Lake Bonavista or any of the Calgary lakes? What is this "piss filled swamp" garbage?
All he's saying is that when you live in a lake community, you can do lake things any time you want, and therefore not need to schedule holidays to do it. Where are all the beaches within a five minute drive or a short walk from your house? Sylvan? 3 hours round trip. Yeah, let's go to Sylvan after work for an hour, and let the kids run around on the beach and build a sand castle!
It's a bonus that most communities don't have. It's not the be all end all, but it's damn nice to have. And then, instead of getting your fill of the beach by using a week holiday to go to Shuswap, you can take a different vacation.
Honestly, do you hate Sliver so much, that you can't see this simple point? Do you not also see that in the winter there is free skating all the way around the lake, any time you feel like it? How is that not a bonus? Where else are you going to go? Chestermere? Rideau Canal?
So weird the obsession with dissing lakes around here. My dad lived on Lake Bonaventure when I was growing up, and I think I swam every single nice day, all summer long. You know, for an hour here or half hour there. Then ride bikes, then play hockey on the driveway. Same stuff you did, except we got to also mix in the lake stuff.
Hating lakes. LOL indeed.

really think the title of it should be:

I always love the hate lake communities get from people who don't live there. And I also love the ardent defenders of said communities. This isn't even a Calgary only thing haha

I went for a nice paddleboard and swim this morning at our lake.
We are in Auburn Bay. The lake is very clear, off my buddy’s dock you see down 15 feet to bottom.

Real lakes like lakes with fish, lakes that are clean and clear, lakes that are warm enough to swim in without crazy shrinkage.
Auburn Bay is a great lake. Name me a “real lake” that is better and why?

I think this is more a reflection of Ave mag pandering to where their staff and actual readership lives, instead of reality.

That's another thing I did lots of. Caught rainbow trout off the dock all the time, and my step mom would cook them for dinner. It was great.

The amount of attention this article gets every year never ceases to amaze me.
Do other Cities do this? Its like some sort of 'Neighbourhood Thunderdome.'
Mine is better than yours and I'll fight you to the death to prove it!
Sure, have at it. Hopefully they increase your property taxes accordingly and leave mine alone. I'm happy with my community I dont need some 3rd rate rag to validate my opinion.

I blame the continued deterioration of the Rexall near the Vietnamese restaurant. What a sad place.

I don't doubt the lake is great. The location is terrible though. Auburn Bay is like another time zone. You might as well live in Okotoks....

I think it’s hilarious every year. It’s basically meaningless, and really how can a community move up or down in ranking? Like say you were 20th on the list...there is no real way for that to change unless a new community comes in ahead of you. Otherwise you can’t “do better” and make it to the top ten.
But it’s like a guilty pleasure for me. I like the banter and stupidity of it, and the absolute ridiculousness that desirable areas are ranked lower than less desireable. And this thread generally delivers with amusing jokes, banter about lakes and things like that.

I have nothing against lake communities. I wasn't trying to dump on them, I chose my words poorly. But lakes in Calgary pale in comparison to Buck lake, Okanogan, Shuswap, Buffalo lake, etc. People travelnfor hours to go to those lakes, not Bonavista, or Auburn...

Unless it isn’t. My office is 10-15 min commute, I have 3 pubs walking distance and a number of restaurants (Starbelly’s was a good meal the other night).
New movie theatre, new YMCA, new MEC, new high school.
