I thought the same thing. How convenient that the announcement came after the season ticket renewal date.

And I think we all get it there are policies and marketing decisions need to be made, but what I got fed up with was they never balanced it with anything.
They never put as much effort into making our experience better as they did in marketing and tightening of rules (again, which I get) and BS about drawings on desks and POWERPOINT but it seemed to me this imbalance increased every year (trucks, the trucks were a big one). Maybe it was my deminishing tolerance of this imbalance, matched with a crappy team, that made it seem worse every year.
After almost 20 years of progressively worse preceived value, I was done as a STH two years ago and gave up my Roughnecks Seasons Tickets this spring after a 72% increase in our ticket price and receiving, in my opinion, a sorry-not-sorry response from the Flames. We're happily giving that cash to Cavalry FC.

King mentioned this at the STH event in early June, saying that the new policy would be in place on July 1, which is why I assume it's getting press coverage now with the Stampede concerts coming next week.

I'm not a smoker but the people I know that do smoke wouldn't call this inconsequential. Asking a smoker to have a good time, a few drinks without a smoke for 3 hours is a daunting task by itself. Asking a couple of hundred $$ for that task is a whole new level

What do your friends do on flights? At a movie theater? Or at their work when they can't leave for a couple of hours.
If there is someone who can't go for a couple of hours without a cigarette maybe that should be more of a worrisome sign than anything else. The Saddledome is going in the same direction as every major stadium I have ever been in. It is just a sign of the times where there are fewer people smoking and it is more socially unacceptable to do so. Companies thus don't need to make as many concessions to smokers such as having a smoking area at a public arena.

Since the Flames aren't the first team to do this ... and in fact are the last team in Canada to do it, I assume the other teams didn't notice a significant drop in ticket sales after implementing the policy or else they would have found an alternative.

I'm sure you yourself have friends that smoke no? most smokers can't wait for the long flight to end, even running outside before getting their luggage, movie theater's have a huge smoking area to skip out too(the entrance) and most businesses still have a stinky smoking area.
Sorry, I'm sticking up for the dumbass smokers, If I'm paying $200-300 to watch a sporting event for 3 hours I should have a choice to skip out for a 10 minute smoke break and return. who am I hurting in this (besides the obvious)

As a smoker, I could care less. After all, it does help me smoke less (only during the time I am actually at the games). I just want to make the playoffs and kick some ass.

Just gives me another reason to stay away from that DUMP called the saddledome. This decision just saved me a whole wack load of money. I'll just sit at home and chain smoke cigarettes and joints on my couch in my underwear and drink cheap beer and eat my own.yummy snacks

A very small policy change? Ya sure maybe to you but obviously it's important to the vast majority that's why the thread is so long. If a family of 3 drops $600-$700 bucks to go to a game I think the dad should be allowed outside to have a smoke. What if the mom forgot her important medication in the car? What if I left my bank card in the car?

Memories of walking through every mall in the city smoking. Memories of smoking on the bus and in airplanes. I remember grocery shopping at safeway and every shopping cart had an ashtray attached to it. Used to do my grocery shopping and have a couple smokes

I think the younger fans shouldn't have to be around all the beer and alcohol at the game. I think it's a terrible influence on kids to see all the adults getting drunk on beer. I think it's awful that kids see that getting #### faced at a hockey game is normal and fun. I think alcohol shouldn't be served at places with minors present. The non.drinkers shouldn't be exposed to all the drunks. They shouldn't have to smell the beer everywhere.

Most businesses don't have smoking areas, most businesses actually make people smoke off the premises. In fact city bylaws make it so that people have to smoke 5m away from a doorway, air intake or window.

The vast majority of people don't smoke these days. The word you're looking for is "vocal minority"
Ps it's been mentioned they will let you reenter based on special circumstances (forgot medication in the car, etc)

1. Medication isn't equitable to cigarettes - and likely they would have the leave the arena on an individual basis. I don't know if they would be allowed back in. Maybe so based on the circumstances.
2. You don't buy something if you don't have your bank card. Seems pretty simple.
