Which GMs value ideology and systems less than Treliving, and more so in favour of a coach's record?
I think it is fair to say that Treliving hired the candidate which he believes is best suited and qualified to achieve success with his team. Discussions about how much more he values rapport over accomplishments, or which NHL General Managers gravitate moreso towards one or the other are no more than guesswork.
|
Well you definitively stated that Treliving uses the same criteria for hiring a coach as every other GM in the league.
I personally believe that’s unlikely. And there is atleast some objective evidence to support this belief.

That game will come down to goaltending. If we at least get the same level of goaltending the Germans do we should be ok. But if the goalies are sieves again then ya it's far from a lock.

So did Finland tank against the Germans to try and eliminate Canada (I haven't worked out any permutations of the standings)?

Pretty certain that Canada just needs to beat Latvia to qualify for next round.
It would be interesting around here if Hartley led Latvia were to beat Peters' Canadian squad.

No. There is no way doing that hurt Canada at all. Finland's loss to Germany opened the door for Canada to finish second in the group and hurt Finland's chances of winning the group.
Finland now needs to win its game against the US in regulation in order to win the group. If they don't win in regulation, there's a very good chance they drop to third.
If Finland had beaten Germany, they would have been able to win the group with any win over the US and guaranteed themselves second in the group with an OT/SO loss.
First place in the group likely means playing Switzerland in the quarterfinal. Second place is the Czechs. Third place is either Russia or Sweden.

Why bother, just shrink the tournament size.

I don't know, I like seeing some of these countries get the opportunity to play in a bigger tournament. It does make this somewhat unique.

I don't know I always have the image before a team like Poland or Great Britain play a team like the United States or Canada or Rassia, and the Coach gets ready for his big gipper speech and it always starts the same way
Coach - "Hey number 13 your helmets on backwards"
As number 13 walks into the wall.
Meanwhile another coach is kneeling in front of another player giving key hockey advice
Coach - "Now the rabbit runs around the tree twice and goes through the hole, that way you don't step on the ice with your skates tied together like last time"

Canada vs Latvia is underway. Hartley vs Peters.
Canada scores less than 3 minutes in. The Latvian goalie made a save, but didn't close his legs and the puck just sat behind him until Canada tapped it in.

You sound like the spoilt rich kid with comments like that. Believe it or not there are other countries who play hockey and deserve to be in tournaments as well and actually know how the game is played. Using your theory we shouldnt let Canada play in the rugby world cup or the usa play in the soccer world cup, but because they did these teams have improved and can hold their own on the big stage.
I dont dey that we (GB) may struggle with the step up but you dont know until we try.
Sorry for the rant but some NA hockey fans have a very selfish view outside of the NHL.

It's either him or McBackup.

The bottom line is all that happens is these teams get boosted up and then wrecked and relegated, and we're stuck with the same teams anyways.
Are teams really learning or improving at all by getting their faces pounded in? probably not.
Call me snobby about it, I really don't care. How long have we had the whole relegation, bringing teams up and dropping them for, and we're really not seeing where its elevating the level of play.

McBackup had a rough game against Finland, so might as well go with Kuemper today. The goaltending is pretty damn weak on this team.

Wow, that's a lot of empty seats for this game.
