RFA v. UFA must be worth $1M.
I have always like Hayes, even though I'm always sceptical about junior/college chemistry transforming into NHL chemistry (see Iggy/Hnat).

IMO, not in an arbitration scenario.
Zibanejad just signed for 5.35 last year as an arbitration eligible rfa with a career high 21 goals/51 points.
Hayes has a career high 24 goals/49 points.

Preds announced they won't be offering Hartnell a contract for next season.
Could be the end of the line for him. Might get a shot with a team needing some veteran leadership.

One of my favorite players of the last 20 years.
Warrior type guy, good leader, could play the game however it needed be played, really good man off the ice from what i understand, consummate pro.
Good luck to him moving forward whether playing again or whatever he chooses.

Baffled by comparables
Reilly Smith age 27 contract 5x5 gets traded for a 4th round pick as a salary dump.... 3 days before the Flames trade 1st and 2 2nds for Hamonic.
There was no side expansion deal as Florida played it straight and lost 30 goal scorer Marchessault. ie Smith was likely available to any team willing to give up a 3rd round pick.
Vegas picked up Tatar age 27 5.3 for 3 more years from the Wings for a 1st 2nd and 3rd. Tatar is a healthy scratch in the playoffs.
The Flames extend Backlund age 29 for 5.35 x 6
The stats for the last 4 years for this 3 players ... not counting Smith's 2017-18 60-pt +31 season which was after the trade.
Backlund games 297 goals 67 pts 172 +2 ppg .58
Smith games 325 goals 73 pts 178 +41 ppg .55
Tatar games 327 goals 95 pts 181 -17 ppg .55
So Backlund's trade value is somewhere between a 4th round pick and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
His age and contract length is the worst of the trio.

Since when was Backlunds offensive play the reason he got his contract? Tatar and smith are offensive players, Backlund is a two way. And based on the stats you’ve given Backlund still has a better ppg.

Backlund is better than Tatar same sort of contract... Is he worth a 1st 2nd and 3rd ?
He is not that much better than Smith (if at all) who was a salary dump on a better contract. Is a 4th round pick what the Flames would get for Backlund.

According to a reputable source Marchessault was the sweetener for Vegas to take Smith's contract.

Florida could have protected Marchessault if they went to the 7f 3d protection scheme.
For whatever reason they thought protecting one of Petrovic or Pysyk and the rest of their roster was worth losing Marchessault and dumping Reilly's contract.

Why are we talking about this? Are we trading Backlund?

People seem pretty intent on smashing huge holes in our roster in order to try and fill other ones this summer.
Hold on to your butts, ####'s about to get ####ing ridiculous.

I mean I understand to a degree trying to come up with interesting trade scenarios. But Ricardo seems to be picking a random player from our roster and comparing him to other similar players that were traded for vastly different returns. I'm just confused as to what his point is. Basically that Backlund has value between a 4th round pick and a 1st, 2nd, 3rd pick? Not very illuminating.

In fairness, there wasn't any sane person who thought that taking on the contract of Smith was a good idea.

^ Exactly, it's only in hindsight that people can say management was stupid for missing out on Smith. What was the rest of the league doing? FLA had to add Marchessault as a sweetener for a team to take on Smith's salary. Smith was on a 5x5 contract and only put up 37 points the previous season. The last thing the Flames management wanted was another Brouwer type contract... and aside from all of that, a LOT of players are playing out of their minds on Vegas this season. Who saw William Karlsson putting up those numbers? Or Tuch? etc. It is entirely possible that if Rielly Smith came to Calgary we'd be paying 5mil for another 5 years for a 35 pt player. And then Ricardow would have a heyday calling out management for their stupidity.

Yeah this is straight up HFBoards stuff saying that Vegas "got" Smith and Marchaussalt for a fourth rounder.
Smith was coming off a very bad year, has been and up and down player through his short career and was just given a big contract for five years. Also he had been let go by Dallas, Boston and then Florida.
That didn't look like a great contract at all last year. And it may not look great next year either if Smith's up and down trend continues.

Welcome to the trade speculation and rumours thread, where the best 6 or 7 players of a 20th place team are untouchable, and where our 8th-11th best player + a B-grade prospect can easily get back one of the top 4 or 5 players on another team.
