He didn't get the results in the playoffs but we have seen other good head coaches like Trotz and Boudreau struggle to get their teams over the hump in the playoffs. That Oilers situation can't be easy for any coach as the players in that market get treated like gods and there's so many moving parts in their building with all the ex-Oilers hanging around. Nothing good comes out of having all those cooks in the kitchen. I'm not saying I would want McLellan to be the replacement for Gulutzan but the Flames could do a lot worse and have when it comes to coach hires.

Man, I couldnt disagree with you more.
Those Sharks teams were stacked. A Cardboard cutout of McLellan could have done the same, and as soon as the playoffs started they folded just like that cardboard.
As for his illustrious record with the Oilers, well, I actually think that was part of a League Conspiracy....in their favour.
Lets be honest, the Oilers' last season should have an enormous asterisk next to it. They went from Dogcrap, to Cup favourites, to Dogcrap again.
Maybe one of these things is not like the others.

McLellan strikes me as an upgraded version of Gulutzan; knows enough of the basics to not make a fool of himself, but gets schooled by superior coaches and doesnt do game management or player motivation that well.

Taking a while to get to 5000

If he were to be fired, the Flames going out and hiring the coach the Oilers just fired would be a PR nightmare. There would be no amount of spin that would appease the masses on that one.

If we are going to hire a former Oil coach let's go get Ralph Krueger.

Yeah, that would be a brilliant move. Hire another coach with no history of winning anywhere.

Gulutzan has achieved close to diddley squat at the NHL level unless we consider convincing one GM to hire him as a Head Coach his greatest NHL achievement.

You're a hockey coach with a tremendous pedigree for success.
You're out of a job because, hey, coaches get fired.
Your last job was in a major US city.
What is the reason you choose Calgary as a destination instead of say, 15 other potential locations? What is the compelling reason you choose the Flames over, say, the Islanders or Colorado or Anaheim Ducks or San Jose Sharks or Chicago Blackhawks or Detroit Red WIngs or the Dallas Stars etc etc.
What are the tangible benefits the Flames offer that other organizations won't?
If you don't want a re-tread or a has been or a never was you're implicitly competing for talent that has a choice of where they will go. What do you offer to someone who can choose their own spot that a team like the Ducks or Devils or Panthers can't?

A state of the art training facility and a spectacular building to call home? Oh wait...
I would say a talented lineup that has been grossly misused and abused, but looking for a quick rebound. This is a team that is just made up for greater success. Just showing up and being anything but a brain dead idiot in how you use your players should be enough to see improvement.
I would also say money. The Flames should be able to cough up some serious dough for a coach. They are paying Burke $3M a year to do SFA, so a guy that can actually make a difference should be more than worthy of forking some cash over for.

if 3 million a year prevents King from putting together offersheets for brad richards and trying to move the monahan pick for Ryan O'Reilly it's money well spent.

lol, maybe just the fact that a job is available. The other teams have coaches..Also, quite a few of those teams have peaked and are in post apex.

The weight of 30 years of fan frustration sitting on your shoulders, a laughably poor track record for developing talent, and the worst arena situation in the league by a country mile.
But hey, maybe we can take meddling, out-of-touch ownership off the list?

Better than that fly bye directed at the Flames fans and seems to absolve Gulutzan of any responsibility in this mess.
What has Gulutzan done in your eyes to have earned another year?
What has Cameron done to earn another year?
What has Jerrard done to earn another year?

keep up here.
we're all saying fire gulutzan.
the conversation now is who do you hire to replace him. If never-was', has-beens' and re-treads are off the table as option to replace GG, how do you get a coach with a record for success to come to Calgary.
What do you offer Mike Babcock that the Maple Leafs couldn't?

There are only 31 NHL jobs, and the Flames have a pretty talented young roster. I don't see any issues convincing a top coach to come here.
Babcock is a disengenuous example. He was THEE most sought after coach in decades, and the wealthiest team in the league was ready to back up the Brink's truck to lure him to town.
Good for them. Now the other 30 teams can carry on business as usual.
