As others have pointed out, he isn't slow.
As have been proven by others, he is really good in shoot-outs - that alone can get the Flames a couple of points in the standings, which may drastically alter who they face (or even if they make it in).
He can also face-punch with Lucic... and actually win.
He is also very motivated right now. You join a new team, and you want to make a difference. Plus, he just got picked up from waivers, and I am sure that is a wake-up call for him that he needs to perform better. He is a UFA this year, and will need solid play down the stretch to get another NHL contract.
If any of the above is wrong, you sit him, and he is still popular in the room.
I don't know what the downside is. He will be important for the Flames if they find themselves in a series against Anaheim, Winnipeg, LA... Flames do get pushed around, and this 'symbolizes' that the Flames aren't going to take it any longer. There is really no downside to this move. Small cap hit, no assets given up, so you can quite easily bench him and forget about him.

For sure. It's not like management sat back after the waiver claim and went "Well, that's todays work done"
No need to freak out like Stewart is being heralded as some sort of saviour. Hell, we're only an injury or two away from some pretty crappy players being roster regulars for a bit. I welcome depth like this.
Hell of a lot better than moving assets for Zach Smith like was rumoured last week

Maybe Stewart is the backup incase they don't land the big fish?

Stewart is not slow. Not quick either
He is a powerful skater who gets from point A to B just fine.
Flames hoping he can chip in with some offense.
No risk move that may turn out very well.

He is coming off major injury and surgery and is old. Stewart can play NHL hockey.
It is moot arguement anyway as Iggy doesn’t want to be back, and isn’t a option for the Flames.
Honestly could care less about this though. It is a low risk sink or swim move. Most likely sink, but whatever. Betweeen Iggy and Stewart, there was only one feasible option.

Yup, and I posted this earlier but the Flames can't have Tkachuk and Ferland fighting down the stretch. It's great to see Tkachuk mix it up, but one punch and a season-ending injury could happen. Stewart is a team guy and will have no problem dropping the mitts to protect our guys. Flames do not have that heavyweight enforcer, if he chips in with a few goals and points that's great too.

Where did this Stewart is slow come from? I really think people have no idea and because he's big just equate that to slow. All of a sudden CP has him labeled as slow.
|
I guess something made him a healthy scratch for the Wild even though he is big, fast, good hands and the team is fighting for its playoff lives.
Need to keep expectations in check I suppose.

Really hard to say, there are a lot of names. Though mostly complimentary ones and not really "core" pieces.
Honestly, of the rumored names, Hoffman seems like the only guy where there would be a willingness to surrender any coveted assets, because he directly addresses a huge need right now and is young enough to be part of that core group for another 5 years.
Considering Brad's angle of a "hockey trade" though, maybe he's even circumventing the sellers market and looking to pry a guy that isn't even on the deadline radar, with a roster player going the other way (Brodie/Stone/Bennett).

Exactly, why people are against this I do not know. We were playing Lomberg a week ago.

No issues whatsoever with this pickup. He provides insurance in case of injury and is probably better suited to our 4th line than a few we have had play there this year.
Just a small piece that does nothing to hurt the team.

They have a bit more depth than Calgary though. Flames are an injury or two away from Tanner Glass getting regular ice time. Screw that

With our lack of depth on RW, a free asset that can play or sit at no acquisition cost absolutely is.
What can't be debated, is it's not as bad a move as you're worked up about and attempting to make it sound. You're being "that guy" this morning, and have gone from saying you don't like the move to being on a plight about it.
Relax, and step away from the ledge.

Agreed. I'm not even defending the pickup. In truth, I don't know much about him. Just find it funny that in the first couple of pages a couple of posters said he was slow and it snowballed. Posters who may or may not know much about him are now basing their opinion on the pick up based on this with comments like "Great, just what we need, another big, slow body".

Cool. Stewart has been rumored to be on his way to Calgary for years - just glad it's at this cap number and zero acquisition cost.
Prices are sky high today and I don't think most teams are going to feel good about the players they gave up 1st round picks for.

Some absurd posts regarding this claim.. If speedy, young players on expiring contracts were available, we would be claiming them too. Zero cost acquisition, and I like the upside
