What's the risk? He's on an expiring low-value contract, fills a couple needs for the team (RW, tough) and his acquisition cost is zero. If he doesn't work out he sits in the pressbox.
So why is this such a disaster?
We already have a slow, big, tough RW.
Yeah, if (when) he doesn't work out, you sit him. There is no risk, yes.
But it addresses nothing for the team. He can't score anymore, he is slow, his possession stats are awful and he has a reputation of being an inconsistent player - the last thing this team needs is more inconsistency.
Depth is good for a push and to fill in for injuries and not put that on young guys from Stockton. That’s all he brings and that’s fine for zero acquisition cost.
Perfectly fine with this move.
Stewart's a warm big body that has had some scoring touch in the past. You gave up nothing but a contract spot for him.
Him slotting beside Jankowski and a healthy Ferland would be a bit nasty line. I hope it works out, because he could be that Schlemko type waiver add that boosts the team.
Hathaway has really struggled in the past couple of weeks ... puck has been a bomb on his stick in simple plays.
They really needed to upgrade that third line right wing spot, and Stewart is a cost nothing option along with Troy Brouwer, and then eventually Kris Versteeg.
Hopefully one of them catches it and forms a third unit that can play.
Bottom line the team shouldn't pay the prices this year, so I'm glad they found a cheap way to maybe catch lightning in a bottle.

I guess it's worth a try because the cost was free, and there is no obligation past this season, but Stewart is awful. Like, a cheaper but tougher Troy Brouwer awful.
However, unlike Brouwer, Stewart is absolutely LOVED in the room. Every stop he's been to he's been one of the most popular players. An absolute beauty. He'll be a great add in that regard.
Beyond that, though, Stewart is one of the toughest players in the league and has a heaaaavy shot.
Unfortunately he's slower than Brouwer and can rarely get to spots to use his shot, takes undisciplined penalties, and makes Nail Yakupov look like a Selke candidate...I can't even describe how poor he is defensively.
Hope he comes in hyped up and delivers solid two-way play and depth for the Flames down the stretch. Great dude.

Is everyone just saying he is slow because he's big? According to his scouting report on THN:
SCOUTING REPORT
ASSETS:
Owns tremendous size and strength, and is at his best when working the corners of the ice. Is physical and can play with a warrior's mentality. Is fast for his size and has what it takes to score goals, including a bullet for a shot.
FLAWS:
Consistency escapes him, which he needs in order to hit the next level of production. Has to play with an edge at all times, since he cannot get by with talent alone. Must also continue to work on his play in his own end.
CAREER POTENTIAL:
Inconsistent, talented power forward.
Well, I think he’s a putrid player. That’s not shocking because he was waived. He hasn’t scored more than 25 points since 2013-14. He plays in a very sheltered role and has terrible effects on possession.
I think the positives are: free, contract ends this year.

Brouwer is supposedly a very popular guy in the room. I don't know why you are suggesting otherwise.
