I take it to mean he would not take Drasaitl straight up for Monahan, regardless of contract implications. Which I wold agree. Monahan>>Drasaitl.

Too bad we couldn’t have both. Imagine Gaudreau/Monahan + Tkachuk/Draisaitl

Said this in another thread but Monahan has more goals than Poolparty and Draisaitl combined. There is no question who I would take, regardless of contract. Contract definitely shows the difference between a GM who understands negotiations and a GM that gives his RFA's a blank cheque.

You couldn’t get the puck from that duo. Throw Frolik or somebody on their RW. Draisaitl is a good skater though

Draisaitl is a passer (leads the league in even strength assists) while Monahan is a goal scorer. He is overpaid for sure though, by at least 1M

Especially overpaid for a winger.

Yup. Like 60% of his even strength production this year has come on McGenerational’s wing. But Chiarelli is a horrific GM with no negotiation skills.
Just look at that Kris Russell contract lol.

Fake news. Sounds like you're reading HF Oil.
Gaudreau has 34 even strength assists to Drai's 29.
Both decent numbers for playmaking wingers at this stage of the season.

Maybe an outdated statistic. Heard it on a broadcast a while back

No maybes about it. It's not the case and I'm not sure it ever was this year as Johnny only has a handful of PP assists with how much it's struggled overall.

I think that they are roughly equal players - Monahan has a better shot with one of the best releases in the league but Draisaitl is a bigger body who can make more room for himself and is a great playmaker. It is a really weird comparison as a result.

On February 6, 2018, Leon Draisaitl lead the league in even strength assists with 29. Gaudreau, McDavid and Voracek had 28.

I think their salaries and the fact one is largely a winger makes a big difference.

Monahan is taller than Draisaitl. Not heavier though. Monahan's playmaking is underrated IMO.

Monahan is a centre whereas Draisaitl plays and produces predominantly on the wing. In a discussion about Monahan's value as a centre any comparison with Draisaitl is nonsensical.

Draisaitl giving me two more reasons last night as to why I was aboard the Drai > Monahan wagon.
Just an incredible player.

Monahan is great too, and a top ~15ish C in his own regard but I think Drai is just flat out more skilled while also playing a heavier game. I think most would pretty much agree as well if Drai happened to play elsewhere and outside of Western Canada. Monahan is clearly the better shooter / goal scorer though.
