Yep, it’s hard to reconcile Treliving’s contract work with the guy who hired this staff, and didn’t lottery protect the Hamonic first. Fatal mistakes imo.

Its been such a weird back and forth about Gulutzan for almost 2 full seasons now. I've been in the camp that doesn't have much faith in him, but at this point you just ride it out and see what happens. My gut tells me the Flames will be exactly what they have been the entire time under this coaching staff. Kinda, pretty good, sometimes, maybe. I feel like no one really knows if this team is good or bad. Might squeeze into the playoffs but unlikely to do much damage. I just want there to be a clear answer so that the organization can move in a new direction at the end of the year, or we can all accept that the fancy stats people were right and he's a great coach. We'll see what happens.

I don't want Hartley back but Bob's teams routinely overcame multiple goal deficits thanks to a little pep talk and stubborn faith from their coach. Gulutzan's teams throw in the towel after an overturned goal with 17 minutes left. And yes, the goaltending let them down, but they took their foot off the gas pedal as well.

Motivating is a huge part of the job title!

While everyone blames the coach, I’ll be blaming the speed of this team. We’ve been beaten soundly by the fastest teams in the league as of late. Boston swarmed us and suffocated us with their speed and forcheck and now Vegas is doing the same thing but it’s even worse today. Is there any coincidence that they’re also the 2 best teams in the league? Not surprising at all.

This team simply can’t keep up. Too many slow players on this team. I mean how badly did Vegas’ #1 center make our #1 center Monahan look on that 1st period breakaway. Hope Treliving and Burke got a good view of how good teams are built in today’s NHL. It’s not truculence that wins you games, it’s speed and skill.

Is Treliving the one who negotiates contracts? I thought they had a cap specialist who did a big chunk of that?

Based on results, Treliving should be sacked at the end of the season as well. He may have brought in the right mix of talent, but his inability to recognize just how bad the coaching staff is should be enough to get him canned. Flames may have to clean house after this debacle. This is a team going in bad directions everywhere.

But why not roll the dice and fire him? The only reason not to fire him now is to protect Trelieving's ego or ownerships pocketbook.

The silver lining is that hopefully Gulutzan takes Treliving down with him.

While I do agree that this team often looks slow, I think that is partially due to the system they are playing. That strict adherence to moving up the ice as a 5 man unit. They wait too long to transition up the ice it seems. I think that probably does have a lot to do with it.

I don't think that this team has 'slow' players - who is really slow on the team? Brouwer? Stajan? Possibly Stone?

This team just plays really slow for some reason. I don't know why exactly, I don't know how, but this team ends up looking slow often.

^^ won't let me edit, but I mean: "Outside of Brouwer, Stajan and Stone" - this team doesn't have a lot of slow players.

While I've been in the "fire Gulutzan" camp a while now, it's way too early to start calling for Trelivongs head. Sure he's made mistakes, but I have faith in his ability to learn from them, and there are definitely things he's good at.

Agreed. When I see people calling for both of their heads, it confuses me. The whole "Fire Gulutzan" argument centers around our roster being too good to be this mediocre on the ice - so why fire the guy who built the roster? Or if the roster's mediocre, why do we think a new coach will solve our problems?

I can't remember the last time we took a timeout for the purpose of refocusing/rallying the team, or made a strategic goalie change before the score was out of reach. Are those just tactics of the past now?

What gives you the idea that he'd be able to motivate them anyway? He doesn't take time outs to get the team's head back in the game because he has nothing in his repertoire to rally them. Staring at an iPad during the time out probably won't do a whole lot.

This is like the 20th post-game interview this season Gulutzan has said we came out unprepared.
