I honestly don't think Stone is as much of a priority to them. Everything they've been talking about is all Karlsson. He's their pillar of light in an otherwise dismal franchise right now. Stone should be a major part of the team but I'm guessing he'll want to much or he'll want to be on a winning team not a cheap one.

I think he's just as untouchable, maybe moreso. Karlsson kind of gave them an out with his contract comments.

I think he should be, but judging by the way things are run in Ottawa I wouldn't be so sure. I think they'd trade Stone for the right package but want to keep Karlsson no matter what.
That's just me though, and part of it is hope that they'd trade Stone so the Flames could swoop in and add a much needed missing piece.

But if they Gut the roster is Karlsson going to want to stay?

Crap move by Ottawa.
Gaborik's contract is terrible for what he brings to the rink. He's good when he plays but he never plays.
His contract must be insured so Ottawa must be hoping on big dollar savings while he is on IR, or they maybe he just "retires" onto the long term IR while there.

No Dal Colle who was drafted one spot after Bennett and can’t even crack the nhl is the definition of a bust.
Bennett was a winger when he was drafted to the OHL and converted to C in junior. Tough to say he is actually a centre considering he only played it for a season in juniors.
Bennett is on the trajectory to be a disappointing pick if all he ends up being is a 15 goal 30pt guy. Calling him the definition of a bust when he is 21 is a little dramatic.

Another side effect for the Kings: Phaneuf has a NMC for the rest of his contract.
If the expansion draft for Seattle is set for 2020 and assuming the same rules as Vegas', Kings would be forced to use a protection slot on him.

They're not worried about that, they'll likely catch him Jaywalking or something and cancel his contract

To me, it seems that the Senators will likely have to choose between Stone or Hoffman + a second piece staying in their lineup due to Stone's likely contract demands, Ottawa's internal cap, and the likelihood of an enormous EK contract on the back end.
Given Hoffman has shown remarkable chemistry with Duchene (the acclaimed centre to build around) I suspect they are willing to consider trading Stone for a big package. We should absolutely be throwing everything possible at this.

I think the Stone dream is a pipe dream. He has been called untouchable from day1. More rumors about Karlsson than Stone.

On HC, Kypreos states that this deal was more or less agreed to last June at the draft, but they wouldn't eat the 25% that ended up being a part of this deal.
Also states that Ottawa wanted Phaneuf out since that time. He really is starting to chart into "malcontent" territory in regards to the locker room culture if this is true.
Pulled the trigger when they were actually saving some money with the Gaborik contract figured in.
So in essence, they truly are trying to save every dollar they can in Ottawa. This could be a truly bad hockey club for a long while and indicates that there is little chance Karlsson will be part of the future. Probably will be dealt at the draft as opposed to the deadline as more teams will be in on him based on cap room of those interested.

If you're Stone or Karlsson, why do you even consider re-signing with the Sens?
If it were me, I would get out of there ASAP.

If there is a 2020 work stoppage it would happen in September 2020 while an expansion draft would take place in the summer of 2020 for Seattle to have an inaugural season of 2020/2021.
The more likely scenario is that there won't be an expansion draft in 2020.

That's probably true.

Starting to? He's the poster boy of being a malcontent and a locker room disruption.

Bennett was drafted 4th overall in a not so great draft. He had potential to be a top line talent, but to say there was any kind of a guarantee is a huge stretch. To call Bennett the definition of a bust, when plenty of players, who were drafted at the exact same position, never even become NHL regulars is a bit much. Wouldn't you agree that a player who doesn't actually have an NHL career would be the actual definition of a bust?
A player drafted #4 overall in a soft year is typically expected to be a serviceable first liner to a solid second liner. If Bennett develops into a solid second liner, he's right in the range you'd expect him to be in.
And quite frankly, you know it's a poor year for forwards when a defenceman goes #1 overall. That alone should tell you that none of the forwards available that year were expected to be franchise type centres.

Gaborik's deal was front loaded. So while his AAV is high, his payment in actual dollars is low. It's an actual money savings, not a cap savings arrangement.

I can respect the Kings bringing in players hoping for a push. If the Kings were my team I would be happy. Shipping out a $4.875 mil, non producing forward for some depth, strength and leadership on the blue line. Good move.
From an Ottawa perspective, also a good move, specifically because it's Melnyk Ottawa Senator's we are talking about here. Save a little bit of cap space, help them tank a little more. Good move.
**Also gotta think Ottawa will try to flip Gaborik for something, a 3rd or 4th maybe?
*edit*Also Gaborik turned 36 today. You've got to think he's going to want to retire here pretty soon or win a cup. No way he stays in Ottawa for long.
