My quick math was a little off. It's more significant. Including what players were owed remainder of this season, #Sens will save $5,455,107 in real cash with the transaction - even by eating 25% of Phaneuf contract. Suffice to say, I think this was the key to the deal.

A lot of fans here complain about the Flames owners but I wish they would realize how good we have it. Being a Senators fan must be tough as that team's main goal seems to be participation and balancing the books.

They won 7 playoff series since the lockout. We won 1.

And what does that have to do with the ownership situation?

Their ownership has been more successful at building a winning team in recent years then ours has.

That's way too much for Gaborik. He's washed up. No way.

Last season's Cinderella run isn't what I would consider success at building a winning team considering that same team is a dumpster fire this season. Flames are heading in a better direction and the Senators look to be going the other direction.
Anyway no matter how you look at it the Kings come out the winner in this deal as the money doesn't matter to them and Phaneuf is a better player than Gaborik.

A couple weeks ago someone on here was getting all mad because many of us were saying the Senators owners are cheap...too cheap to pay their players
They are about to lose their franchise player because of it

In all seriousness evaluating who is the better ownership group based on playoffs wins is just a very poor approach. Look at all the nutty stuff that Melnyk has done, and the overall budgets the team have deployed.
The Calgary owners aren't perfect but they continue to spend to the max to try and win.

First, I don't remember them winning anything
Second, What did it have to do with the owner? GM made some good moves/picks. Owner is gonna cheap out and lose those players.
And how does their future look? They just sold the farm for a marginal upgrade at forward and are gonna lose their best player in the next year or so.

I wonder if Vegas would have taken Dion had he waived his nmc for the expansion draft. Hindsight, Dion screwed himself and the Sens

Is there a "grass is always greener" crowd? And how would this apply to the Senators?

To say he was a plug in Calgary is, in my opinion, flat out wrong. He struggled the year they traded him, but was great before that.
Edit: and Karlsson as a 20 year old had 5 goals and 26 points in 60 games. Good, but hardly tearing it up.

Meanwhile Karlsson was tearing up the league at 20 years old.
The guy is a plug, has always been a plug, has the intelligence of a drain plug both on and off the ice and padded his stats his first few years playing against 3rd and 4th lines.
I'm sure he'll do a great job manning the ghetto blaster in LA's room.

I was looking at the trade of Gaborik to the Blue Jackets from the Rangers and what an awful, awful series of trades that was.
In less than a year they turned Brassard, Dorsett, Moore (John), and a sixth round pick... into 34 games of Gaborik, a second and a third draft round pick.
That is an impressive diminishing return on the investment.
