Pretty sure that is a D man thing considering where Ferland and Frolik play.

Chicago looked like they were trending to a playoff spot when Crawford went down.
They simply aren't good enough anymore to make the playoffs minus one of the elite goalies in the league.

Chicago writer lists Ryan Hartman as a potential trade chip for Chicago.

Should be someone that the Flames look at. Right shooting RW, RFA, 23 years old, plays a gritty in your face style.

That stuns me somewhat. Why on earth would they want to deal him? Decent upside, could likely be bridged for cheap. Not like they're saving a ton of cap space, probably want picks. Doesn't make much sense to move him for other prospects.

They probably don't move him. But they have horrendous d-depth right now. If they can get a cost controlled top 4 d-man for a package that includes Hartman, that is probably something they look at.
edit:
Oh and also Chicago has already made a contract pitch for Swedish RW Michael Lindqvist. They have already admitted that to the Swede press.
Probably guaranteed him NHL roster spot so they need roster space for him too.

Friedman on Fan 960 right now, thinks the Flames are scouting Zack Smith heavily. Not Hoffman.

Friedman on 960 says he is pretty sure that the Flames scouting the Sens is about Zach Smith.
Says Flames looking for a 3rd line C and Smith can play a western conference style game.
Issue is Sens want futures and Flames don't have picks so likely prospect being sent to Sens. Flames have no interest in trading Valimaki or Andersson.

Hmmm...Backlund negotiations not going well? Jankowski being used as a trade chip for that scoring winger?

Don't like this no matter the angle.
Backlund replacement? No thanks.
Jankowski replacement? Why?
Stajan replacement? Fine this season but what about next year? If Dube outplays him (and they keep Backlund, etc) now they have another bigger contract stuck on the 4L that they're shoehorning in.
I get that they want grit, but this would be a poor move.

If we wanted a bottom 6 center from the Sens it should be Pageau and not Smith.
Younger, RH, better faceoffs, & better overall player, and even though he is smaller plays just as gritty and actually has more hits and blocked shots per game played.

Or the Flames will trade for Z Smith and demote Jankowski to AHL.

IMO if a deal for Smith happens, an equal contract has to be going the other way. The Flames can't add any more "questionable" contracts, if the Sens took Brouwer back it could work but other than that, why?

Starting to worry the play is to recoup a high 1st round pick for Backlund while picking up Smith for a B prospect or - and this worries me - Gillies.

Not sure I would want Zack Smith even if he was free. 3 more years at 3.25mil for a bottom 6 forward - hard pass.

If Zack Smith is our add...ugh....because having one Troy Brouwer just isn't enough?

After the Brouwer disaster I'm really, really, really surprised and disappointed the GM is once again barking up this tree. The team is finally close to free from the Stajan contract and it seems like this organization can't spend that money fast enough on another bottom six talent.

I will go one further - If Zack Smith is our deadline day acquisition and we lose a significant asset, I'm starting a fire Treliving thread...
Seriously, why are we looking at expensive grinders, isn't having Troy Brouwer enough?? Grr..

This team needs more high end talent than highly paid bottom six players. Save that money and at least overspend for a guy like Kane who can play top 6 than overspend on depth again.
