You have to give to get and right now there is no doubt in my mind that our best trading chips are Brodie and Bennett in a package type deal. The player coming back would need to be elite though and need to fit in on the RW which narrows the possibilities.
Would I trade a Bennett/Brodie package for Simmonds ? Good god no.
Would I trade a Bennett/Brodie package for Stone? Depending on the other parts of the deal that would have to happen to make it work you're darn rights I would.

Is Bennett an RFA or a UFA after the end of next season?

If bennett is a RFA at the end of his current deal, a Bennett+Brodie package seems pretty damn enticing.
I'd be reluctant to move Bennett, but if we can get a Right handed RW who is in the right age group, and can jump directly into our top6/PP and provide an immediate improvement, i'd be open to it.

If you had to resign both players long term you would opt to go for Stone because he is about 5 years younger. Stone's contract is up after the year and Simmonds has one more year left though. But if you're looking longer than the next two years, you may want to consider Stone, especially if you think you can re-sign him.

Has there ever been any thought of converting Bennett to RW? The skill is there to play top line...

I think Tkachuk is best suited to switch to RW.

They tried him there for a period, either last year or the year before.

If the flames aren't up for a big splash trade/signing, and intend to fill the top 6 organically, then it absolutely requires Bennett moving up into the top 6, as early as next season.
Here's the biggest problem i think the flames are having (based on their regular forwards of use this year):
Right Handed forwards: Brouwer, Hathaway, Lazar, Versteeg
Left Handed Forwards: Monahan, Gaudreau, Ferland, Tkachuk, Backlund, Frolik, Bennett, Jankowski, Stajan
Quantity aside, there is also a major disparity on the quality of the 2 groups. Flames have no high skill guys that are right handed. I think this is a major issue that has plagued the PP also. Their limited in the types of set plays, cross seam/one-timer setups, based on the personnel.
of course hind sight is 20/20, but i wonder how the flames would have fared having iggy play a 3rd/4th line, PP specialist role rather than taking the gamble on Jagr. I would have voted for jagr no doubt, but looking back, perhaps that may have been a move that could have filled a need a bit better.
On a side note. I think i read that only 10% of the world are left handed. How come we see such a dominance in Hockey for lefthanded shooters?? I remember being a righty, whether it was a stick, bat, racket, i always was taught and played sports as a righty too. Perhaps a stupid question, and one where the answer is obvious, but i've got no clue.

When I was a kid, right handed people shot right. That's what I did and still do. Golf as well. For some reason it changed, I think sometime in the 90s. Someone decided that your dominant hand should be at the end of the stick, they say for control in stickhandling (although my stickhandling was always controlled by my pivot hand - the right in my case - if it's good enough for Mario, it's good enough for me).
Going "opposite" hand also leaves your strong hand on the stick when poking or sweeping one handed.

I am right handed, but shooting left always felt more natural to me. Although I swing right in baseball and golf.
I am not sure why this is, but I know quite a few people like this.

So you swing both ways.
I'll see myself out.

Vanek will never be a Flame under this regime but I'd welcome him here with open arms.... he's a fantastic player.

lol, he's not a "fantastic" player at all. He's a floater.
And I got that impression from reading up on him after last season on several Red Wing forums, and that was largely the impression there as well.
He'll never be a Flame for good reason.

He's a fantastic offensive player whose scoring has been a revelation for the Canucks this year. So many of their fans want him dealt... and then quickly re-signed in the summer. He's apparently really stepped up this year and really helped Boeser.

Couldn't disagree more about your over-rating of Vanek at this stage in his career.
There are several players on that terrible team with inflated offensive numbers and he's one of them. His entire game is suspect with him being extremely inconsistent with a history of being unengaged when it matters most.
I really don't think you've watched him much over the last few years.
This is a gross mis-use of the word "fantastic".

CCCP during their dominant era were rumoured to all shoot left. Something about the Soviet system forced everyone regardless of their dominant hand. I imagine that influence NA hockey to an extent.

I know it was already mentioned but when you consider their age and that Stone is just entering his prime while Simmonds is just about on the back-nine while needing a new contract.... it's a pretty easy decision if it were that simple.

I know that a lot of the fun of this thread is to speculate. However, I think that it is prudent to reserve judgement on what the Flames should do until they've played a handful more games. After all, the Flames do play 11 games before the deadline.

If they want the first we could sub it for Bennett in that deal. I really like this one, but I think many people would have a severe aversion to bringing phaneuf back.
