Because the Flames are paying Gaudreau and Monahan 13m instead of $20m, they actually can afford to give Tavares $12+. Between that, letting Stajan and Backlund walk, that covers it.

They could buy out Brouwer and get $3.5 extra in cap space. Trade Brodie for more scoring. Championship

They say defense wins championships, but in the finals everyone has defense. The team with better stars wins 9/10. It's why we lost to Tampa.

Yeah, Flames can afford $12-13 million cap hit if that's what it takes.

Even with Backlund at $5 million per.

Where it would get dicey is the following summer (2019) where Tkachuk, Ferland and Bennett would all need bigger contracts, but would be easy enough to move out Frolik and/or a Dman.

We lost to Tampa because we were beat up and out of gas.

Also, it was in.

Tkachuk-Tavares
Gaudreau-Monahan

our top pairing and Smith

That's how any rebuilding team would draw up their end game for their core at those respective positions on the white board. Would completely alter (and solidify) the structure of the team. What he brings is what separates the Flames from where they want to be.

And 31 other teams think that too, it’s a pipe dream

JT doesn't want to go to another city with franchise/arena issues

With us looking like sellers at the deadline, we should really push for returning a guy like Daniel Sprong for Backlund.

What makes you think the team will be sellers? Or not re-sign Backlund?

Unrelated - It sounds like Snow is reiterating he ain't trading JT.
Which makes me believe he has some confidence in re-signing him.

What's the rush for JT to sign anything before July 1st?
Why not let a team overpay him or at least throw him an offer for more than what the Isles are willing to give?

Because he wants to be an Islander. Maybe that means he is willing to leave money on the table so the team can afford other signings, maybe not. Either way the bottom line is he wants to stay there, they want to keep him, it is simply a matter of time.

He may want to win a Stanley Cup, and there's no evidence out there that a team making 12M+ can balance their cap and win a Stanley Cup.

I fully believe Tavares is going to free agency, and that he's going to sign with Toronto - for money less than what we all think, and Matthews will sign a similar deal.

I think some of you need to realize that our top two centres are going to be Monahan and Backlund. If Tavares can get 10+ million on the market from 30 other teams, why would he come here? Does he miss Hamonic?

You have been listening to Leaf fans and media too much. The same thing was said about Stamkos last year, everybody wants to play for the Laughs.

Stamkos did essentially make it to free agency.

He made it to the point where he talked to other teams.

Don't see why Tavares wouldn't do the same.

I think he does exactly what Stamkos did, right down to staying with his current team.

I look at the Leafs, with that coach, with Matthews and all their wingers, and goaltending, and some of their d-men...I think Tavares can look at that roster and think "we could win Cups", and I think they could win Cups.

I don't listen to any Leaf fans or media, because good grief who would. I just look at that organization...I see a fit.

Aren't Tavares and Stamkos buddies? With the cap going up I could see Tampa being Tavares landing spot.

They are already a true contender obviously, with a young core and probably the best or second best GM in the league. Warm climate year round, and IIRC lighter taxation than most places. There is a reason Stamkos stayed there for an $8.5 million cap hit when most figured he was signing for $10 milion per or more.

Tax rate and that 8th year on the contract that he could only get from Tampa made the total value of the contract hard to match for other teams. Tavares would only have the tax rate benefit.
