Agreed, but its pretty clear given the acquisitions and the pursuits Treliving has been through that he covets a veteran presence (or several) on this roster.

If we trade for Zach Smith I will lose all hope in management

Smith should have negative value similar to Brouwer. Less money per year, but 3 years remaining after this. Just a brutal contract.

Maybe. They might want to sweeten the deal to dump that contract for sure. I really have no idea what Ottawa thinks of the player. Pure speculation at this point anyway.

Zack Smith has 3 years left at $3.25M AAV. That is a no good contract for what he is. He's not $3.25M good.

Only way this would be somewhat palatable for the Flames is if Brouwer or Stajan are heading to the Sens.

Otherwise acquiring Zack Smith is just plain stupid.

So, since the Sens likely will not take Brouwer or Stajan...do not want.

Not even Stajan since his contract is almost over. The only thing I'd want to trade for Smith would be Brouwer.

Martin's contract is not as bad as Brouwer's in terms of outright money but make no mistake, it's horrible for Martin because of the fact that he's little more than a face puncher who has pretty much no NHL talent in any other way.

Given the way the NHL game is heading, and what Martin is, people would be silly to want Matt Martin. Glad the Leafs are not playing him very much anymore and healthy scratching him.

Still laughing at the Rangers for acquiring Cody McLeod off waivers. Now that is a perplexing move.

Zack Smith has 3 years left at 3.25 (so, 9.75m left)
Brouwer has 2 years left at 4.5 (so, 9m left)

Next to zero savings for Ottawa save for the fact that they'd pay off their debt one year faster.

Insider trading:
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider...avares~1317339

Snow told LeBrun that he isn't trading Tavares
Islanders will use all the time until July 1st to try and re-sign Tavares
Dreger: Some believe that Tavares will wait until end of season and at least look at what the free agent market looks like.
31 teams will express interest if that happens
Tavares camp may wait to see how Bailey and Lee are handled by Snow.

Chiarelli won't trade Maroon until he gets a better idea of how much it will cost to re-sign him.
Both sides are interested in keeping Maroon in Edmonton, but Oilers want him at the right price.
If they can't come to an agreement, he will likely be moved

Preds not necessarily out of trade market even after the addition of Fisher.

Brian Gionta has let teams know that he still would like a NHL job after the Olympics

A group of players and agents are seeking an independent review of NHLPA business practices. The agents have produced a 5 minute video that questions the business practices.
To initiate a review 31 player reps and NHLPA executive committee must be convinced a review is necessary.
Expect that video to be shared among those voters.

Looks like Maroon will get 5X5 at least then.

That is fantastic. For a team that needs to increase their skill level, signing Maroon long term sounds like a great idea.

Man I wish we had a realistic shot at Tavares.

IMO our current roster goes from playoff contender to legit cup contender with Tavares taking the expiring Stajans roster spot. Even if you let Backlund go it'd be the top roster in the Pacific on paper.

I agree with you. But as someone else pointed out to me, about 25 teams in the league believe this to be true.

Yeah I suppose that's true. Flames would have two legit 1st lines though.

Tkachuk - Tavares - Whoever
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland

Chucky is already trending to be a 50 point player. With JT hes probably a 70 point guy easy. Then the two of them together could easily prop up a 3rd wheel.

Ah well. Dare to dream

Yeah, it truly fills a gigantic need. Who knows, maybe JT will see it the same way.

Imagine the first PP

Monahan-Tavares-Brouwer
Gaudreau-Gio.

I know it seems like a pipe dream, but they really do need to go all in on JT in the summer.

Is there roughly enough cap room there with the Backlund pay raise and Stajan etc coming off the books?

At 12 million it's doable even considering Tkachuk/Bennett/Janko extensions

The Flames will need to draft well to fill the bottom six but room is there
