Rightfully so? I don't know.

If a team is looking for a center.. Bennett has failed at that role. Jankowski is a natural center and doing okay.

Really? I don’t think so.. I think Bennett has shown more at his peak than Janko has at his. It will be interesting to see what gives and who covet’s what and for why.

But I think Bennett is going to be that late bloomer, put it all together at around 24 years old if he can remain healthy and become a top tier player in the NHL.

I don’t think Bennett “failed” at Center, I think the Flames failed him at Center and didn’t provide Sam the proper coaching at Center and became impatient.

Unfortunately Bennett is a casualty of no room on any of the lines above him.... either at center or wing. Play 3rd line minutes and with 3rd/4th line wingers and what do you expect.

How do you figure? Trying to imagine how you would know what kind of coaching he received.

He received the kind that stunted his development at Center by moving him to the wing for one.. he’s way to young for anyone to say he himself failed to become a Center because he was drafted #4 overall as a Center. Obviously he excelled at Center at some point. So what changed? The only other influencer on his development at Center other than his own desire was??... that’s right!!! Coaching!!!

Calm down. Not every prospect reaches their potential. Just because a player excels against 16-17 year olds doesn't mean they will do well in the NHL.

Maybe... just maybe... he isn't very good and is a bust?

To be fair, Bennett NEVER got to play with a winger the quality of himself. He was never set up for success in that role. All good though, he and Janko can shine together.

We're not going to subtract an effective roster player in a trade. We're looking to add another effective roster player.

Picks and prospects are the pieces to move.

What nonsense.

Who stunted his growth? If I'm not mistaken his best season was on the wing under Hartley. He was then moved to center to start last season with Tkachuck and Brouwer on what was supposed to be the second line. When it became evident a change was needed Tkachuck was moved to play the M&M, versteeg took Tkachuck's place. The rest is history there.

Versteeg-Bennett-Brouwer struggled despite reasonably easy circumstances. It was fairly apparent versteeg was the stabilizing presence on that line. The following year Zbennett once again started at his presumed position, C. How did that turn out? 0 pts 15 games. Pretty much a disaster. The Flames desperately wanted Sam to succeed at C. He couldn't. They had to move home to the wing after a season & a half of nothing but patience.

So where are we now? After a spurt of life Sam has settled into being invisible. (As I type this he scores). Nevertheless, two of his seven goals were 'let's just throw this at the net and see what happens'. It's completely reasonable to question whether not not he can even become an effective 3rd line winger opposed to the first, of strong 2nd, line center he was drafted to be.

For the record, I would love to see Bennett become a significant player on this team. But suggesting his lack of success is due to the coaching staff is just foolishness.

What would you consider to Sam's counterpart as far as a winger goes? Started last year with Tkachuck who I would take over Bennett every day of the week. He had chances with Guadreau on his wing also.

What winger do we need to bring in to prop Bennett up? Ovi? P. Kane?

Lol, wow... I’m the one getting emotional? It’s all a conversation in jest, ladies. Don’t get YOUR panties in a bunch.

Coaching is what has, is and was failing this team as a whole and to a player. From situational to on a daily in terms of communication and it shows!

Suddenly Bennett is immune to poor coaching and he just simply was never good enough as a Center? But... his history as a hockey player has been a Center? And it’s on Sam?
Do you think Bennet asked to be moved to the wing? I would be surprised if he himself gave up on trying to become a skilled Center at the NHL level. Are you guys suggesting he has?

Really?

This isn’t on the way he has been coached/developed while being with the Flames? Coincidentally since GG has been around?

I put the blame on GG for ruining Bennett. He should have started last season on the first line playing wing. GG ruined his confidence playing him with old plugs. A 4th overall pick should be stapled to the first line, He should have had every chance to play with the Flames best players even if it was on the wing. I do agree idiot coaches can ruin players GG is very Eakins like. Bennets first season was no fluke under Hartley the kid had promise.

In junior, Bennett played on the wing for his first couple of seasons before they moved him to centre. But even after that, he still had a tendency to attack from the wing. I always figured he was going to be one of the countless junior players drafted as a centre but moved to the wing in the NHL. I don’t know why there was so much resistance in the organization to do that.

I don’t know if it would have made a big difference in his development, but I will always wonder.

I think people forget that Bennett is 2 years younger than Janko.

Jako is likely more the finished product than Bennett.

I can agree with suggesting Bennett should have been left on Backlund wing, but as igitang likes to point out, Sam is a centre (he's not). why should Bennett have been handed first line mins? What had he done to earn that, or was he so special it should have been handed to him? The Flames wanted Bennett to develop into a top two line C, until it became beyond clear he didn't have it. He was playing so poorly they had no option but to move him to the wing. And it's not the coaches fault or his line mates fault or the fans fault or Harvey the hounds fault. Fact is, if there is any blame to be laid, most of it is sam's to shoulder. The NHL is a big boys game.

If the Flames failed Bennett at all it was not sending him down to the AHL when they had the opportunity. Even if it meant sending him down half way through last season.

I felt he should have been in the AHL... let him light it up down there for a season to develop, likely even be a leader on the team... we'll never know now.

This is true. Didn't Bennett also grow up playing on McDavid's wing?

The idea Bennett is a C is misguided.

Our last win, and one of our only ones by multiple goals came with Bennett as first line center. Just sayin'. For such a 'terrible' center how is it that the team can even function with him playing such a significant role?

Bennett also never played 15 games this season at center. He played 8 at center(including a win ovr Anaheim, a blowout win over Winnipeg, a win over L.A. where his line was our best line on everything except the box score, a loss to the Sens where he personally dominated), and then one more against Carolina.

Bennett never played wing for any significant time in major junior. He transitioned to center as soon as he got off McDavid's line in minkr hockey. I guess Draisaitl is a winger too since he played wing on McDavid's line.

Bennett has never been given a chance to be a top six forward for this team. Saying he has 'had chances' with Gaudreau or Tkachuk is grossly disigenious. He played a handful of games with Tkachuk when Tkachuk was still a frosh trying not to get eent down to the CHL. He usually produces with Gaudreau over the course of his career, but Gaudreau is always re-united with Sean Monahan regardless.

Also trading TJ Brodie is asinine. You won't get half that caliber of player back. You're better off trading Hamonic for a LHD andmoving Brodie back to the right. Also I wouldn't mind trading Stone as he is a black hole.
