Default VGK re-sign Jonathan Marchessault (6 years, 5M per)

News Update

@TSNBobMcKenzie
Jonathan Marchessault and VGK closing in on contract extension for the pending UFA who is currently making $750K. When it’s done, it’s expected to be 6 years with an AAV of $5M or thereabouts. He’s earned it. Quite a story in Vegas, where great stories abound this season.

Good signing. I can't believe how poorly Florida handled the expansion draft.

Yeah I can't believe they lost him... I really wanted us to sign him the year he was a UFA. Damn, would he look good on our roster. Speed and scoring exactly what we need.

Wow, at $5M that would be a pretty sweet deal, he looks to be on pace for a 70+ point season.

I still can't believe how stupid Panthers management was to give out a 26 year old 30 goal scorer and team leading scorer for free in an expansion draft. And he was on a 750,000$ contract.

Apparently it's to do with the fact that Florida wanted to get rid of Reilly Smith's somewhat large contract, but had to pay this price to do that. Still dumb anyway.

Florida seem to have made a lot of stupid decisions in the last couple of years. Firing Gerard Gallant at the top of that list.

I'd like to see them extend James Neal too.

Can't help but cheer for these guys.

I can't wait to see how far this team goes with Gallants system which looks very similar to ours except their team has embraced and executed it well.

Looks to be a great deal. Still can't believe Florida gave him away for nothing.

They gave him and Reilly Smith to Vegas. Just ask Call how they have managed to ruin a good team there.

In Florida's defense, they did get him for nothing in the first place.
But if you add Smith, wow.

If BT had traded Mark Giordano, except Gio was making 2 million, for a 4th rounder in order to rid us of Troy Brouwer, that Gio was a UFA signing wouldn't save him from the gallows I would personally construct in front of the Saddledome. And Reilly Smith is no Troy Brouwer.

I don't think Tallon should draw an NHL paycheck ever again.

I remember hearing in the summer from Renaud Lavoie that the owner asked Dale Tallon to shed about $10 million in cap space...too bad this was the result for them.

It shows how hard it is to rid yourself of unwanted salary in a cap world, especially when you are under the gun from orders from management.

There is a reason that Stajan and Brouwer still draw a paycheck from Calgary.

Gone are the days when GM's like Sutter would gobble up former 20 goal scorers on bad contracts.

The problem is the owner meddled the first time when he removed Tallon and replaced him with idiot yes-men, and then further when he asked for Gallant to be fired. The result of that was a horrible season and a LOT of lost fans. They had built up a lot of good will with the fans with the previous season of 100+ points, and squandered it immediately, resulting in poor attendance.

So really, the need to cut back on salary from the Owner's perspective was his own doing. If he had left well enough alone, the team would still be drawing well and he wouldn't be worried about losing money. I thought Viola and co. would bring some stability to the franchise, but they're no better than any previous version of ownership, possibly worse.
