In a world where Lucic gets the contract he did, Kane gets at least the same, probably 6.5 as a start.

Not only am I reasonably sure treliving has stated he doesn't like rentals, even if he was looking we don't have the picks to get him.

I still think Kane has another level to reach in his game. He still has elite powerforward potential imo

Assuming it’s a trade for prospects, I’d put him on the top line with Gaudreau and Monahan

Gaudreau - Monahan - Kane
Bennett - Jankowski - Tkachuk
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik
Hathaway + Jagr - Stajan/Lazar/Brouwer

Lucic has 5 50pt seasons to his name including 2 60+ point years and has a strong reputation. Having said all of that the contract is still brutal so why would a team make a worse mistake than Kane.

If Kane gets $6.5M then Backlund gets $7M

IMO Kne for the Frolik or Brouwer deal makes sense

O’Rielly + Kane + prospect D

Backlund + Brodie + Prospect Forward + Prospect D

To me.. the value of the above seems so close.

Both teams have an RFA that they will need to resign in Backlund/Kane

Both get a young player signed in a position of need O’Rielly/ Brodie

What will finish the deal depends on the + for both sides.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - O’Rielly - Kane
Bennett - Jankowski - Hathaway
Frolik - Brouwer - Jagr
Lazar, Stajan

Giordano - Hamilton
Kulak - Hamonic
Andersson - Stone

I’m sure none of the GM’s particularly like rentals but Stone was a pending UFA.

I forgot about stone, he was one that actually worked out, for sure. Buffalo are looking at higher end Ladd/Hanzal prices and it'll be interesting if anyone gives them that.

The 6/6.5 would rely on his continued level of production this season. We often see people paid for how they perform in a contract year and I can't see him being any different if he has a 65/70 point year. Obviously value would depend on term, perhaps teams will go a few years less given his sketchy injury history. He's going to be looking for a raise though either way.

I really like what he brings when he has a healthy stretch, I'd just be surprised if we could find a fit.

We are better off passing on Kane. He is a good hockey player, but at least in the past not such a good person. Brad and his predecessors have built up a very good team full of good people. All it takes is one bad egg to ruin the chemistry of the team. We just need Brad or Burke to have a serious talk to Gully about the need to change the PP process and use of players asap (and preferably also change the pp coach). We have the players we just need to use them properly.

The Flames need a RW in the worst way.

They don't really have any legit options for either the 1st or 2nd line. Frolik, Hathaway, Jagr, Ferland, and Brouwer are all more of a 3rd/4th line player that can play up, where you need a legit top 6 forward to make the offense flow better.

Sure, but only if we can derail it within the first 5 posts with a "fire Gulutzan" drive-by

I hate to break the news but Evander Kane isn't the answer to the problem. The Flames should be getting the job done with the roster they have.

Treliving is sneaky.

Kane is the guy being actively shopped but I can't help thinking that the coveted guy is ROR. He's a 1B centre who is going to be wasted on a rebuild.

Wouldn't be too shocked at a ROR+2nd+change of scenery prospect (Baptiste) for Hamiltons+Shinkaruk and-or Gilles.

Kane? Asking too much, they will go elsewhere.

I tend to agree with this take. Backlund wants too much money and the Flames have a solid right side with Anderson close to being ready to make the big club n

RoR $1.5M retained and a 2nd for the Hamilton brothers.

Ferland is on pace to score 44 points this season. In what world is that not the precise definition of top-six production? He may not be an ideal top-line winger, but he is undeniably a top-six forward on pretty much every NHL team.

Agree ferland isnt the problem its the dearth of scoring on the second line. As far as im concerned we are looking for a second line winger.and probably a 4th line center to give the 4th line some skill and speed.

I think there is a new, emerging "second line" constructed around the pairing of Jankowski and Bennett, and will not be surprised to see these two maintain around a 50-point pace in the second half of the season. The Flames could definitely use a boost in scoring depth, but I am not convinced it is a glaring issue.

I believe the most realistic addition this team could acquire without dealing many assets is some type of 4th line centre. Stajan/Lazar need an upgrade

Agree textcritic. I think the bennett line is poised to take more responsibility and i think it happens this year. Add a 4th line center move frolik there and aquire mystery box 2nd line winger and this team will be nasty to play against.
