Game against Toronto was an excellent game in general. Thursday's game was a good road game. Limited odd man rushes and chances in high scoring areas. Remaind patient. Not a lot of zone time but they did a good job limiting the Habs to the outside.

As a very critical fan of the Calgary Flames it's sort of dawning on me how tough we as a fanbase really have actually been. It's obvious through their play to me. The team comes home, the Dome is quiet, you can feel the tension in the atmosphere and it's not a fun one. Fans are expecting results and wins, and you know what? You can call it BS you can call it whatever you want because it isn't quantifiable. It isn't understood well. It isn't something you can measure or really put your finger on.
Emotion means something in this game. Whether you like it or not. On the road, there's no expectations. There are no fans to impress, there are no boos to be heard, there are no wives or kids or distractions, there is no local media interviewing you after the game about what you did wrong.
Team goes on the road, and in these two games Gulutzan starts to show his human side. And whaddya know, the team reacts. Little things like his challenge or weird little cheer or even just when the camera panned to him during these two road games- he's showing his non-mannequin side. It was refreshing and you can tell that it is leadership that reverberates. If you don't buy it or you don't believe it or your one of these guys that likes to pretend that leadership doesn't matter or captaincy doesn't matter or the people in the dressing room and team and relationships matter than that's fine. You go believe whatever the hell you want.
But there's a reason why for years and years people have talked about these intangible qualities. I have read so much on this site about how these characteristics don't matter. F that ####. These characteristics DO matter. It's why Iginla, in his final 2-3 years, was a terrible captain. He didn't care anymore. It bled throughout the organization. It's why Gulutzan, if he showed his human side just a little bit more, would be the difference between an OK coach- good at tactician, but a horrendous leader- UNTIL these last two games...
So I think it all does matter and DOES include the fanbase. If the fans on Saturday night against Vancouver are welcoming, loud, supportive, the C of Red we usually are during the playoffs but maybe just maybe getting off our asses during a regular season game... yeah I think it matters. It creates an energy and a buzz that these HUMAN BEINGS feed off of. I think you're very wrong.
|
I agree with your points, but I will say this:
Perhaps Gulutzan seems robotic because he knows how nervous the team already is. Adding more pressure and anxiety by being overly emotional might make it worse. Perhaps he feels that a calm and steady hand is what the team needs to get over their nervous ways. I can't say for sure, obviously I'm speculating based on other known facts.
It's also possible that a little more positive emotion or "rah rah" type stuff might get them over their nerves. Again, it's hard to say what the correct approach is. Someone closer to the team might have more insight on this, but quite frankly, that stuff isn't really any of our business. It should stay in the room between players and coaches.
From my perspective, coaching matters, but it doesn't fix everything. Leadership matters, but it doesn't fix everything. There are so many factors to a successful team to consider in the equation. Yes, we need to consider these two things and look to improve them, but I think they are minor contributors to success, and not necessarily something that makes or breaks a season.
In the end, the results matter more than anything. If the approach is unpalatable to fans, but it gets this team to perform well, then I'm ok with it. I think it's good to note these things throughout the year and then do a post-mortem on all the good and bad at the end of the year.

I love the ATL but the best part is once you get through the other team´s comments and see the Coilers logo - the best is yet to come.

Ha ha ha -- for sure. As I was reading the ATL (thanks as usual Gaskal!) I was thinking the same thing -- all the comments on the "non-goal", the rookie 'keeper -- no different that we've seen here a zillion times on CP or on other ATLs. Funny...everyone except Toronto and Detroit seem to think they're discriminated against by the refs - and sometimes even they do, though no one can figure out why.

I wonder if there is a replay of his wicked wrister that went of the post in the 3rd. What a laser shot that was. He kind of button hooked around the blue line, cut around the slot and from having his stick in the weirdest position, just unleashed a shot from hell that rang off the post.
The kid has one of the best shots in the league, no question. I really hope he can break 40+ goals, is PPG and he finally gets the respect he deserves. It's a tall task, but he seems up to the challenge.
Edit: Saw that shot on Button's video. Pure filthy!

Haha. Flames fans barely read the crap in GT and PGT, my friend.
Seriously delusional if you think the players themselves read it

Also:
"Why are we great one night and terrible another?"
"The refs hate us - we never win a challenge".
"WTF is player X doing out there?" [note - this is most often for the PP or OT]
"Coach X sucks because [insert reason]".

I don't doubt they might read it from time to time. But to think that organizational choices and actions on the ice are a result from what armchair keyboard warrior write, is just silly.
If someone wrote a blog about your job and actions at work and they had no experience doing it, they would likely be off the mark and you would dismiss it because ''how could they possibly know what it's like''. Same thing for the players. I'm sure some browse CP or HF from time to time. But it's likely they laugh at what we say, more so then take it to heart. Especially stuff about leadership, effort, coaching/GM decision making. We can all write what we think we know, but none of us will ever even come close to knowing the full story.
Players and Flames' employees are probably mocking us for the stuff we say here.

Good road game by the Flames. Habs popgun offense wasn't enough. Pacioretty is the goat, didn't pick up his man and really, blew the play in the Flames zone on the winning goal.

All good points, but I tend to think the issues with the Flames have been badly exaggerated by what transpired last week. From my perspective, they played a debacle of a game—ONE game in that time, and it has coloured perceptions of their overall season. The Oilers are clearly in the players’ heads, and I firmly believe it is something they need to work through. I thought the third period explosion was good for just this reason—if nothing else I hope that it helped the players to get over whatever it is that has them check-out against their provincial “rivals.”
I am not worried about this team. They are on the tail-end of a funk but have played some really excellent hockey this season.

Monahan was Danault’s guy. They were even in the Habs zone when Mony pushed the puck up, he went for a hook and then completely coasted back. The best view is from Button’s video and the behind Price view. Especially noticeable when you see Mony coasts the last bit awaiting the pass.
Pacioretty’s guy was Brodie, and he did his job by taking away that pass. He looks bad because he’s standing by no one as the shot goes in after Brodie turned to get back/high for a possible rebound after no pass came to him (which is a heads up play by Brodie).

I wouldn't put myself in the "Brouwer hater" category but - my God he looks awful to me. It felt like every time he touched the puck he did the worst possible thing he could do with it.
He should never touch the ice on the power play again.

The OT goal was a reverse view of the 1987 Canada Cup winner. Brodie played the part of Larry Murphy.
In 1987 Mario was even the one to poke the puck out of the zone to start the rush, like Monahan last night.
