They play timid and docile.
Aside from one lengthy win streak last year, this group has been very underwhelming for a "good team". The fact they cannot get in the right frame of mind for more than 1 or 2 games a week, leaving the the other 2 games as complete side shows is a coaching problem through and through.

Even now, the positives from a mediocre 5-6 start are that the team has gone 9-7 since? Something needs to happen here.

It's alarming at how oblivious the staff seems to be to change or at addressing the need for change. Instead they seem to happy to point out bad luck ad nausea as a cause for poor play when his team has been blown out of 30% of the games they've played this year.....perplexing.

The D pairs are not working, do we see a mix up? No.

The PP was working for a while but looks like poop again, do we mix it up? Yes, by putting 1 goal Troy Brouwer out there despite having Tkachuk, Ferland, Jankowski to choose from instead.

So, I am not huge on advanced stats. But I found this to be quite interesting after last nights game. How do we dominate the game like we did and lose 5-2? We had plenty of chances (30 of them) and couldn't score enough to win. This was simply unlucky last night when it came to offense.

NSFW!

And I also found this to be very interesting. On the defensive side of things, all the goals were scored in the goal crease, basically and all high danger chances were right in front of the net. Why? Why aren't our guys clearing that space? Why are we letting them just walk to the most dangerous area of the ice? I don't get it. We shouldn't have lost this game, but you can see from the heat map that we were playing on the perimeter and they weren't. Simple as that. They were on a 10 game losing streak, they crashed the net and got to the net as often as possible, we are soft and choose the perimeter. Time for a new tactic. Benny, Ferland, Tkachuk need to get in the faces of the goalies more often, get to the net. Snow shower the goalies as often as you can, be aHoles out there. This soft play is hard to watch. I was late getting home and missed the start of the 2nd, but it went from 1-1 to 4-1 so quickly, I didn't both watching the rest of the game. It is disheartening. I hope the coaches aren't showing these kinds of stats to the guys and telling them that they played well enough to win, something is still missing and it this isn't on Mike Smith.

Pretty funny to hear them laughing about T-Bro on the 1st PP unit. Asked the question how many other goal-less players (now on pace for 3) in the entire league are gifted 1st PP unit time.

Looking at his entire body of work, I've been a supporter of GG. But I'm so sick of these D pairings that are losing us games. Put Brodie with goddamn Stone. The bloody answer is in front of everyone. But nope, because Mike Babcock demanded LD/RD pairing on TEAM CANADA, our coach feels the need to do the same. Big difference being, Babcock had a steady stream of elite LD/RD pairing to select from. We don't.
They weren't really ripping on GG IMO. More having fun with "what if" GG was to decide to have a fit on the bench, what should he do?

I don't disagree that Babock uses L/L D on his first pairing because that's what he has. But the problem is right now that Treliving worked hard to get even pairs, which in almost all situations works, but supposedly doesn't for Brodie. So now he has a slate of RH Dmen. Which one gets to play off-side because Brodie can't handle the switch? Is putting Stone, Hamonic or Hamilton on the wrong side to appease Brodie just going to make their games worse?

This has been the issue all season long. Flames haven't been able to convert on chances when the puck has been loose in front of the net, while the Flames defense has continually allowed for players to bang home chances from within there.

The defense is soft, and can't defend their slot. Last night when Flames had similar chances, the Flyers defense would tie down their sticks, or block the shots. They were much better at defending the slot. I believe this is what has been the case all season long.

When this defence makes a mistake, it's a huge mistake that almost always ends up in the back of the net. It's starting to look like the only reason why haven't started as poorly this season as last season is because Smith has been stopping shots that Elliott wasn't able to.

Flames have lost 3 of 4 at home, all 3 losses in embarrassing fashion against lesser teams. This is not a team that looks like it wants to play in the playoffs, this is a team that looks like it has given up on the season, despite the fact they are currently in a playoff spot.

Pathetic, stupid plays over and over and over again by players that should not be making such stupid plays. I don't know if it is coaching, or something else but at the end of the day, this team is losing to teams they should comfortably beat - and those are points you can't get back.

Time for something to change. You'd think after the embarrassment on Saturday against the hated rival they would come out and play their best game of the season.

Nope.

Only word to describe this team right now is pathetic.

I realize you shouldn't make knee-jerk reactions and/or emotional decisions in this league but man, I'd fire the entire coaching staff based on play alone not the record. Even if the players should be held accountable I would just pull the plug...

Problem is who do you replace them with?.....

Isn't that the job Hamonic was brought in to do?

Yes, as is the job for every other defenseman and centre on the roster. Their primary role is to prevent that very thing from happening.

I think you answered your own question here.

To be so dominant against a team, yet lose, is head scratching. Then you see the High Danger chances, and it was a 50/50 game. Elliott played great (maybe the "you suck" comment by Versteeg was taken to heart?). Smith was 'ok' last night. The Flames D did not help him much.

This is like the opposite of Hartley Hockey for me - lots of chances against and being dominated in CORSI, but often not giving up much in the way of high danger chances, or at least out-chancing them, often with even higher high danger chances.

Which is why this CORSI crap doesn't really mean anything. It doesn't get goals up on the board. Ultimately, get more A+ chances than the opposing team, while limit those against you, and you'll more times than not win.

I'm a fan. I think they're fun.

Interestingly last nights game was the most dominate game the Flames have played all year from a puck posession perspective. 68.42 CF%. The second most with 64.86 CF% was the 6-0 home loss to Ottawa. The third most with a 62.20 CF% was the 5-2 home loss to Vancouver. The 4th with 60.67 CF% was the 2-1 road win in Washington and the 5th with 59.74 CF% was the 8-2 road loss to Detroit.

My point? None really. Just interesting. When the Flames easily control the play they typically get embarrassed. I know score affect has a bit to do with this but if you look at the game flow charts in all of those horrific losses, Calgary controls the play right from the start. They usually have a big lead in chances and shots while the game is still tied.

League wide it's just as odd. Of the 10 most dominating performances this season, only 2 times the team clearly in control of the game has won.

As for losing the game 5-2 when you control the play, it could have been worse. Check out this Hurricanes game. The Hurricanes had 18 HDCF to the Leafs 4. The Leafs are a talented team that can score at will. The Hurricanes are not.

Spoiler!

That is odd. I wonder if it has to do with the team that has the possession advantage playing too much perimeter, slower pace hockey? Not really getting high quality chances from danger areas? Are the teams that are winning the games, losing the stats battle getting goals off of rushes?

Think it just means there's no correlation between possession and success.

The teams that are winning the CORSI battles are winning the games more often than not. It's a mistake to assume otherwise based on a single game like last night. Not every CORSI win is based off of splow pace, poor quality shots and perimeter play. Those are, however, the type of games that can cause outlying CORSI stats.

Well yeah. That's kind of the point of using the stats. Last night was 50/50. Not a great game in that sense. Unfortunately often this season, when the Flames have had more A+ chances than the opposing team, they find ways to lose.

These are the most lopsided Flames games this season when it comes to high danger, A+, chances:
14-5 for the Flames - loss to the Canucks
15-7 flames - beat Caps
19-9 flames - beat Coyotes
6-3 flames - loss to Sens
12-6 flames - loss to Wings
7-4 flames - loss to Canes

The truth is the Flames get their chances. Their 4th in the league in HDCF%. More often than not they get more A+ scoring chances than the opposition. The problem is the Flames are 19th in HDGF%. They don't bury those chances and the other team does.
