So who are all the available coaching options right now? It seems like a bit of a thin list at the moment.

Sutter is the closest fit I can think of in terms of what I think this team needs (ie an actual leader), but am not sure this current team is build for a guy like him.

Sutter > Ruff > Bylsma > Capuano = Hartley > Keenan > Therrien > Muller = Oates > Tippett

Although I have Hartley and Keenan in the middle of the pack, realistically there is a 0% chance the come back.

He's not available. Capuano is currently the assistant coach to Bob Boughner in Florida.

I know, it surprised me too.

Hartley has a 5 year contract to coach the Latvian national team.

If assistants aren't available then cross Muller & Ruff off the list too.

This post made me realize that even if we replace GG...there are going to be as many happy as unhappy people with the new coach as there are now.

In terms of getting an underachieving team to overachieve (and the natural connections to the city) I would have ranked Tippett and Sutter equal with a slight advantage to Tippett.

Fun fact autocorrect for Tippett is Ripper...

It’d be interesting to see what Sutter would do with the team. I can see him looking at all of Gully’s notes, scribbles, x and o, analytics, video, and just chucking it all. Telling the boys to go out there, play north south, hit everything that moves, break out normally with forwards swinging low and if they don’t win they’re bag skating for the next week’s worth of practices.

Can you imagine him screaming at the ref for a bad call as opposed to slumped over looking at his shoes. I honestly wonder how the team would respond to that. I kind of think they need it. They’re playing way too tentatively and soft, and they’re thinking way too much.

Indeed, Sutter loves a heavy game with plenty of accountability.
People wondering if Brouwer could be salvaged would likely be happy with the game he'd be asked to play. Hathaway would be a fixture too.

At least Darryl would get them to man up.

Wouldn't see any disinterested players, or sloppy play, that would be addressed after one game. Sutter usually has a good read on the pulse of the team and can tell you exactly what needed to be addressed before the next game. He had the mindset that if you had a 1 goal lead that should be enough to win the game and if wasn't you saw the ship moving in the right direction pretty fast.

With Darryl, Keenan, and Hartley, you knew the Flames still had a chance many times when they were down. I didn't see that from Brent and don't see it from Gulutzan

What we need the a "from behind or tied" coach and "with the lead in the third period" coach. Gulutzn can have the second job.

YES!! That's the thing I love about Darryl, his team might not beat all teams all of the time but his team will definitely beat any team up when needed!

This team might even be able to make it to the SC with Sutter, the 04 team wasn't as talented as this one.

I saw on twitter that of the 26 games played, the flames have finished the 1st period with the lead in 3 frigin games. That's worst in the entire league. Next worst in the league have double (6).

Thats pathetic. Coaching, leadership, all of em, it's another example of this team being unprepared, not ready and playing off their backfoot most of the time.

It sounds to me like you're kind of selling Sutter short tactically. He's much more than a taskmaster who gets the team to work hard. He's very good at creating a solid defensive system and excellent at countering what the other team is trying to do offensively. That's IMO the main reason why his teams are so often a nightmare to beat when they get a lead. He likes to play his tactical side down, but when you look at his teams play, there's a lot more than just hard work going on there.

He's also generally good at reacting to what happens within a game, although I think that goes for all experienced coaches.

This and that results in no consistent flow to their game.

Added Paul MacLean to that list. Jack Adams winner 2013, last two seasons assistant in Anaheim, doesn't seem to be doing anything right now. I also struck out the guys who currently have NHL jobs, just for clarity.

When you look at that list, MacLean seems like a semirealistic option if we assume Gulutzan is fired. Certainly more realistic than Hartley or Keenan.
