770 save percentage is always going to be in the goat discussion.

Not sure about the objective comment, fairly certain every opinion I have is subjective for sure, but to say something isn't objective seems a bit much.

That sv% is definitely atrocious, but it doesn't tell the whole tale. Brodie was easily the Flames worst player.

I agree that Smith had some certain measure of responsibility on the Vanek and shorthanded goals, but can't blame him all that much for the other three, as they were just really unfortunate bounces.

Canucks Goal #1 is on Brodie. It looks like Dougie's fault at first but he was trying to defend both the shot and the pass at the same time because Brodie completely abandoned his mark to attempt to retrieve his stick. At least Brouwer recognizes that defending the man is more important than picking his stick up, but Brodie does not, and that is his job! And because of that, Dougie is left practically defending a 2 on 1 close to our net.

Spoiler!

Canucks Goal #2 though is 100% on Smith. You can see him cheating a bit on the shot if you look closely at his leg positioning. He is very clearly anticipating a push-off to the right. This is in expectation of both Boeser and Horvat being dangerous options for Vanek as a pass, pictured below. However, his job is supposed to play the shot and trust his defencemen to make the pass, and he made a bad read here. I think Vanek may have been thinking fake shot to pass, but saw the gaping opening that Smith gave him. If I can see it... he can.

Spoiler!

The shorty has already been discussed ad nauseum - I blame Brodie and Smith equally.

The 4th goal is kind of on Dougie and Backs - but it was just mostly a bad bounce. I think Dougie was making the right play because there were two Canuck threats, so he had to play the passing lane and not the man.

5th goal was Brouwer being braindead and not covering for a pinching Kulak (and Bart for not knowing how to defend a 2 on 1).

Trust me this isn't a witch hunt!

And I agree the save percentage doesn't tell the whole story, but then it never does. I hand out Smith first stars as well in games where players all over the ice are doing their jobs to make the shots less dangerous.

Bottom line a goalie has to stop all of the easy ones, a huge majority of the moderate ones, but still 90% of the tough ones.

The top five goaltenders in the league have a 94% save percentage and splits of 99% of the easy ones, 95% of the moderate ones and about 89% of the tough ones.

Smith was right there for most of the first 10 games, and now he's 13th in save percentage and has splits of .965 / .928 / .84. Or in ranks 36th / 16th / 12th

He's dropped a bit on the easy ones of late which is a bit alarming.

Brodie's play on that goal was indeed soft. And frustrating. And it would be hard to argue with him being the goat.

But I find the whole team is playing soft. And there is no accountability. Make a terrible, bone-headed giveaway at the blue line (Versteeg)? And you're right back out there next shift and next power play. Get walked on a goal against (Bartkowski)? No impact on ice time.

I am starting to hear rumours that things are a bit lenient around the dressing room. And I am getting worried that it is true and it is manifesting itself in the way they play.

Please let me be wrong.

Guys, I think it's important to accept the fact that this team is not very good and not a playoff calibre team(so far anyways).

Outside of Johnny, Mony, Tkachuk, Backs and Smith everyone has been very mediocre and if not for Smith, this team is likely 5-10....

I still really enjoy the games but I realize that this team's quality, mental strength and coaching aren't really good enough to make a playoff run so my expectation are not very high.
