how big is the Czech population across Canada? I mean if HNIC broadcasts in English, French and Punjabi we might be able to get Petr a steady gig here somehow...

As mentioned, the Flames are at Winsport March 17th @ 10 am, so you can add that to your list of things to do if you want some face time with the players.

Speaking on behalf of our veterans, Dutch people have been awfully nice to Canadians for 70 odd years.

Was it the Dutch queen who said, I paraphrase loosely:

"If Canada sends her soldiers to Holland again in 20 years; just send uniforms!"

My grandfather, who was certainly in Holland in the 1940's; says he was there.

Not sure if this position is already occupied, but I'd love to document the trip as the CP photographer. I was lurking the forums the first time Calgaryboy visited, but I couldn't join the fun since I was living in Vancouver. Just my luck that I just moved back to Vancouver again in August, but I could make the trip and help keep CP visually updated as (one of?) the forum photographers. Thoughts?

Well, we should be nice!
As a (Dutch) kid you are taught in school about the war. About the terrible things that happend and about the joy of the liberation.
You just don't realize that freedom is a privilege.
When you get older you understand those things much more.

I have no strings to Canada whatsoever, besides the Flames.
I just think Canadians are very nice, warm, helpful and humble people. I can notice that on a messageboard but I've really experienced that the first (and only) time I was in Canada (Calgary, Toronto) in 2013.

I feel a strong connection to Canada and every year on remembrance day I think about the Canadian (and other) veterans who fought for my freedom.
It's beacuse of them that I can now cheer for the Calgary Flames. (and sometimes yell bad stuff to the tv because of them)

The Dutch are an interesting group and you're well respected over here and I cant complain, when I was Holland I was treated exceptionally well by the citizens of the Netherlands, the only country I know that can be referred to three times in a single paragraph by three different names. Its almost like a game.

One of my favourite little pieces of trivia:

Quote:
The Princess was born ie The Ottawa Hospital,[2] Ottawa, Ontario, to Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld. Her mother was heir presumptive to Queen Wilhelmina.

The Dutch family had been living in Canada since June 1940 after the occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany. The maternity ward of Ottawa Civic Hospital in which Princess Margriet was born was temporarily to be extraterritorial by the Canadian government.[3][4] Making the maternity ward outside of the Canadian domain caused it to be unaffiliated with any jurisdiction and technically international territory. This was done to ensure that the newborn would derive her citizenship from her mother only, thus making her solely Dutch, which could have been very important if the child had been male, and as such, the heir of Princess Juliana. It is a common misconception that the Canadian government declared the maternity ward to be Dutch territory. Since Dutch nationality law is based primarily on the principle of jus sanguinis it was not necessary to make the ward Dutch territory for the Princess to become a Dutch citizen. Since Canada followed the rule of jus soli, it was necessary for Canada to disclaim the territory temporarily so that the child would not become a Canadian citizen.

Speaking as someone who will not be able to join in the fun, I'd love to see some photos. That said, not everyone is comfortable having their photos spread over a public forum.

I certainly better understood the connection between The Netherlands and Canada after I visited there. We visited a town called Markelo, which was liberated by The Essex Scottish, and we were treated so well. They put on a parade and a barbeque and a luncheon. They have put up a monument to the regiment. It's very present to them. Absolutely wonderful people and I would love to visit there again.

My father became very good friends with a gentleman after the war who flew Lancaster Bomber missions to drop food over Holland. His plane was called Bad Penny and he wrote a children's book about it.

Default Announcement!

Okay all,

As you are aware I have been responsible for the collecting of moneys for this venture and it is with great pride in this community that I can attest that we actually collected too much money.

I blame this squarely on STeely who made the plane ticket a lot cheaper than I budgeted for and the rest of you for being absurdly generous.

We do have other costs that are going to be incurred, particularly with the party being hosted by Aeneas as well as incidental costs of attending games such as fuel, parking, food, etc, which some CPers have offered to help with and we could help cover odd out-of-pocket costs.

However, this is Calgary during a recession and I want to offer anyone who wants a full or partial refund the opportunity to discreetly and confidentially request that of me via PM or email that they already have or can PM me to get.

Look, we all know the score here, you all as a community were immensely generous and I also understand that some are going through hard times, we really dont want to take money that cant be afforded so there is absolutely no judgement or anything if you need some or all of it back.

The plane ticket has been purchased and most of the other funds are earmarked for other anticipated costs, but there is some money that can be returned.

Now if everyone wants their money back I obviously cant do that, and Aeneas and I have decided that we cant spend all of the excess on a trip to Vegas unless STeely has more points to burn...No? Thats a shame.

In seriousness though, we have discussed this and Aeneas, myself, FurnaceFace and everyone else involved in this have no intention of personal gain or being frivolous with the funds and determined that if there is excess after Petr's trip we would donate it to charity (probably Flames Foundation, but nothing is set in stone), we just want to keep the out-of-pocket costs of volunteers to a minimum as best we can.

So, theres that. If you want some or all of your contribution back you can contact me, it will be 100% confidential. Furthermore, I have been contacted by about 3 more people who are willing to contribute, you still can, I'm not turning money away because I understand that we all want to help calgaryboy as best we can and I just want everyone to be able to have all of the relevant information so they can consider their contributions accordingly.

If this is unacceptable to you or this is not how you wanted your contribution to be spent or you have a better idea, please let me know.

Very kind of you. Thank you. CP deserves some pics of course. From some meetings with all CPers etc. I am really not against this idea.

Someone else has probably already suggested this, but what about a "white hatting" ceremony?

What are the chances we could use some of the excess for a rink time and have a pickup game. Or better yet a 4 team mini tourney for the Calgaryboy Cup!

Aeneas arrange it for me back in 2011. Was awesome! Right at the airport after arrival. Great memories!

I think everyone should also know the above certificate, and ALL of CB's Flames stuff is not tucked away in some corner. It is all prominently displayed along the length of the hallway in his flat for everyone to see as they walk in. Mrs. CB is a very patient understanding woman to put up with all of this stuff...and in fact seems to not mind it. Her fridge is even decorated mostly in Flames and Calgary magnets.

Nope. Keep my money and have an even bigger party. I'm not worried about getting anything back. Just make sure that everyone has a wonderful time, especially Calgaryboy.

Make it a special time. This is one of those wonderful things that grew organically, and it should be a special memory for all involved.

And I definitely want to see pictures so I can live vicariously through all of you.

Put my contribution towards the party. I need to contribute more than just bad comedy.
