I am not buying the whole Dougie needs Freddie to be a good hockey player thing. I think Freddie was acquired when he was because the Flames could use the depth and the fact he was Dougie's brother was a bonus. I am sure Dougie Hamilton realized when he became a pro he probably was not going to play with his brother. The guy is a professional, I find it hard to believe that because his brother is sent down to the minors he is going to suddenly regress.

Seems like a hell of a reach to infer something like that from a personal observation.
By all accounts, Freddie is very hardworking in practice and is a good teammate. He also happens to be someone we can substitute into the bottom line without fretting too much. So, an ideal 14th forward. But he doesn't bring as much to the table as Glass would in the same role, so he is on the waiver wire instead.

Let’s go Jankowski!!!! Got the nerves calmed after some games and now he can relax a bit knowing he’s staying. First point coming tomorrow I’d wager.

Man oh man, time after time I keep seeing this get posted around here; That the reason Freddie was here was simply to appease Dougie. And time and time again, I've asked for a single shred of evidence/proof that this was the case. And not a single person has been able to provide an interview, article, or soundbite confirming this. This is literally something CP MADE UP and ran with.
It's kind of disrespectful to Dougie to suggest that the only reason he plays well is because his brother was here and that it was some kind of secret agreement to bring him here. First of all, he was TRADED here. Not signed as a free agent. He went to the team that was willing to pay the price, and that was us. Him nor his agent have a say in where that happened to be. It's nothing like the Niedermayer situation in Anaheim. Nor the Sedin situation in Vancouver. Not even close. He could have easily ended up on Edmonton or some other city if Boston accepted their offer.
So once again I ask to those who seem to believe this BS rumor about Dougie specifically asking for his brother to be brought here, to provide us all with some sort of proof or evidence of this. This 'rumor' can be traced back to CP and it stops there. Of course Dougie was happy Freddie was here. But these guys are professionals and know the day they make the NHL that they are probably going to be traded one day in their career and there is nothing they can do about it (unless they have a NTC/NMC of some kind).

Even if Freddie wasn't brought in to appease Dougie (obviously the likely scenario) its still his brother and roommate leaving for Stockton. To suggest that it might affect how he plays (as I did) is still valid.

Huntingwhale, Steinberg and Loubardias have both suggested Freddie is here because of his relationship with Dougie.
Also from their first season here:
Quote:
The speculation is that among the issues Hamilton had with the Bruins was the fact he wanted them to acquire the rights to his brother, Freddie, and Boston either couldn’t or wouldn’t.
|

I'm not sure how much merit there is to the suggestion, but to say its an entirely CP created rumour isn't true.

If the flames thought there was going to be a large impact to doing this, I'm sure they would have waived Glass instead given that Glass and Hamilton are both pretty unlikely to see much playing time going forward
I still wonder if there is a trade coming with Lazar and/or Stajan. To me its shocking that Lazar is sitting given that they gave up a 2nd round pick for him and getting him regular ice time was a key plank in the strategy to rejuvenating his career

Adios to one of the most insignificant and now obsolete Flames players of all time.

So now you move Hamilton not because Jankowski has proven he's better, as that was always the case, but now that Jankowski seems to have proven he's better than the next guy in line to be a healthy scratch most nights which I'm guessing is Lazar and/or Glass. Or I guess put more simply, now that Jankowski has proven he's a better option in the top 9 than other players. That couldn't be known from just a preseason look.
|
Jagr was not signed at that point.
Tanner Glass took Jankowski's spot on the roster, while Sam Bennett took his spot in the line-up at centre. And this despite Jankowski being a stand-out in the pre-season.
Jankowski should have been with the big club all-along. In this respect, I consider the organization's stubborn refusal to move Bennett back to the wing to be the cause both of Jankowski's unnecessary demotion and Glass's unnecessary signing.

I don't agree with this at all.
You're basically saying that training camp is irrelevant. The top 9 spots are already claimed and that there was nothing any player could do to prove their worth.
I don't think good GM's do that. I think good GM's reward impressive performances. You get surprise players making the team out of camp on a lot of teams in the league.
I mean, I will eat crow in that Treliving actually did the right thing and kept Janko, but the original decision was still terrible.

Yes, this is exactly why Jankowski was sent down.
With management finally getting it through their heads that the golden boy Sam is out of chances to turn into an NHL center, they finally move to the most logical option - Jankowski.

Dougie can't really feel too bad even if the rumors were true.
Not only did we obtain Freddie, we actually called him up to the NHL and let him hang out and practice with Dougie. They even were in on a game tying goal together on Flames home ice. Must have been a very special moment for them. To Freddie's credit, he worked hard to stay up and was fairly reliable amongst the hodgepodge of bottom liners we currently have, avoiding the unfortunate tag of CP whipping boy.
I would say this organization has not only done what Boston has (allegedly) failed to do, they even went farther than what Dougie (allegedly) originally expected.

Jagr was signed before Jankowski was put on waivers, no? Regardless of order of events, I would expect GMs to have back room information/plans well ahead of us.
Albeit, different positions. Glass is also a different position. If Bennett was excelling this year at centre, it would be a different situation altogether, with perhaps Stajan or Lazar on their way out. Which would be a more difficult task, and with the initial hope that Bennett would excel, I can understand the order of events.
If it was truly Glass who took Jankowski's spot, why is he not going to the AHL now?
