Wow, what a nightmare, Doubt the IOC even considers this Swiss proposal, more likely it's just a smokescreen to get more money from a real bid.

that's why it really doesn't matter, all the "walking away from the table" stuff and the sniping.
there will be an Olympic arena and the vast majority will be paid for by the various levels of government.
I would just be interested how the revenue sharing would work with the flames if it was a government funded arena. how much would they still demand?

100% of revenues and a non-compete clause and a token amount of rent just like they have now.
It's pretty clear the Flames will wait until the Olympic bid decision before they come back to the table in a meaningful way. 2 billion or so from the Feds would solve a lot of the issues.

Maybe, however IMO that is a much more likely scenario than the team moving.

How desperate will the IOC get? They've apparently offered some big concessions to LA to host 2028. Could a similar deal be on the table for Calgary?
I expect to see a press conference with a smiling King & Nenshi supporting Calgary's Olympic bid with a show piece arena in the next few months.

Sion is apparently having a referendum too. So where's ours?

An Olympic Bid might get an arena happening, but I doubt it makes a deal any better for the Flames, than what is currently on the table from the city.
I highly doubt that the Flames would get full control out of even an Olympic arena where they don’t put any money into.
They would have to promise money just to get a seat at the table in negotiations. There would be nothing forcing the city to include the Flames at all. If the Olympics were happening, the city could theoretically build their own arena with the help recieved rom other levels of government, own the building outright, and basically charge the Flames as a tenant on the city’s terms.
I’m certainly not saying that’s what would happen, but it could happen. The Flames are playing with fire if the plan is to now wait for an Olympic bid.

Yeah, not sure why people would expect the Flames to take a worse deal then they currently have. It doesn't make sense. Unfortunately I don't expect much movement at all in the arena front in the next 4 years based on the city's last offer. The Olympic bid might move it along but knowing the City of Calgary they would recommend we use Commonwealth Stadium and Rogers Place to host the opening/closing ceremonies and hockey games.

I’d argue that the city’s offer on the table is somewhat better for the Flames than the deal the Flames currently have. Instead of getting an annual subsidy - in the form of not paying any property tax, they are getting roughly the same amount of money subsidized to them up front.

Well they better get going on it before Bill Smith has to release his donor list.

I think this (since deleted) Tweet from the director of communications of the Flames sums up their position on the election nicely. Sorry, no free arena for you.

I just saw that on Reddit.
Lol, Bill Smith would have been our own Donald Trump.
Cant wait to see the donation lists.
Ken King must be really looking forward to crawling back to the negotiation table.
Im sure the Flames were certain Nenshi was gone and their shill was going to make negotiations easy.

What have the Flames said or done to lead you to believe they are coming back to the negotiating table?
I don't see anything happening unless the City makes the first move with a significantly different proposal.

An arena deal is possible. I don’t think it will happen but I wouldn’t say with certainty that it won’t. If the flames want a new arena they know it definitely has to go through nenshi and the current city council unless they want to wait another 4 years.

I'm not an expert on these discussions but wouldn't it be easy for the Flames to use a third party for their donations? So nobody knows it was them?

The city has more leverage than the flames IMO. The league is unlikely to approve a move unless they can expect to generate more revenue in another market. At this point the longer the flames wait to go back to the table, the longer they wait to enjoy the benefits of their new arena. City loses nothing by waiting them out.

Counterpoint - The NHL's ownership group is made up of super-rich, mostly conservative men. The Flames' owners essentially threatened to move the team unless the city voted for the political candidate they backed. If the Flames' owners were allowed to follow through on that threat, then other pro sports owners could pull the same stunt with their own franchises in order to get their own guys into the levels of government that affect them, and point to Calgary as an example of what might happen if the city's voters don't do as they're told. That might be worth the revenue decrease to them.
