Smith was ok but the team gave up too many Q shots from a bunch of b rated players, Hamilton should be on the 1st PP instead of Brodie and hopefully the team turns on the urgency switch fast before the crap hits the fan like last year.
Otherwise, no worries

sure you might complain that it's low...but 28/30 is .933 sv% and all of a sudden...now its pretty....
Goal 1 - yeah he should have saved it but no goalie is perfect
Goal 2 - it was a fluke goal that he had no chance of saving
Goal 3 - breakaway goal - you don't blame these goals on the goalie...it was the team's fault.
Carey Price has a 0.870 SV% in the preseason so far.
Sergei Bobrovsky has a 0.871 SV% in the preseason so far.
Tuukka Rask got blown out last night by Philly.
Cam Talbot got blown out by Carolina.
Braden Holtby just got blown out by New Jersey.
I think that makes my point. People need to relax. It's just preseason. Goalies need to get their timing back and face actual game action to get back into the groove. It takes time. Atleast both goals today were five-hole I believe.....that's just a timing issue.
On the positive side, Smith's glove hand looked really good and that was a major problem with Elliott last year. He had a brutal glove hand.

I can't say I'm overly upset at the result. What I saw were a couple has beens and a couple never wills for the Canucks playing over their heads and a Flames team that looked like it's give a #### was busted.
The part that upsets me was why were the Flames playing like they didn't care?

Right you are. It's residual PTSD after last season's weak pre-season and disastrous start to the season. It doesn't take much to get us hyperventilating.

He gave up four goals. That high stick goal would have counted had it been a regular season game. That said not going to rag on him seeing it's preseason but I would hope this habit of Flames goaltender letting in the first shot of the game is something these new guys can limit over the season as that's just not good enough.
Sounds like the team is going to face some tough practices over the coming days which is exactly what I think they need to be prepared for the opener. The country club preseasons clearly haven't worked for this group of players and even though the next game has no meaning on the regular season it would be nice to see some more jump and a higher overall effort level

No excuses for SullyGully. His team has had time to adjust to his system, so now its on the system if the team continues to fail when the regular season starts.

After reading through this thread it's clear: There is no reason to play out the regular season. We're a terrible team, with terrible players and we likely won't make the playoffs, perhaps we won't even win a single game.

We'll make the playoffs due to 3 on 3 record. Too bad there is no 3 on 3 in the playoffs

Man it sucks that this thread has degenerated between a group of people getting too caught up in preseason and another group getting too caught up in other posters opinions.
It wasn't a great effort for a lineup that is very close to the one that will open up to the Oilers so I believe some fans are justified to be concerned. If some are going to jump off the deep end and throw the coach and other players under the bus then let them do that and you focus on your opinions. The back and forth between the half empty and half full guys are the worst parts of these threads.
I generally feel there's positives to draw from a game like this in that the players are going to see some wrath from the coaching staff that's usually reserved for the regular season.

Slept on it.
If there's one good thing about that weak effort, it allows the coaches to get in the player's faces before opening night.

As painful as this game was to watch, for them to lose like this in a game they should have actually dominated is a good thing. Imagine if they squeaked out a sloppy win with that performance?
They got a free wake-up call that cost zero points. I expect a much better result on Saturday.

So starting poorly is very bad in today's NHL where the margin between playoffs and non-playoffs is razor thin.
And yes we made the playoffs last year ... but not before we used up all our gas just to get there - only to be in the last spot where we were easy pickings for the #1 seed.

Ya I agree with you too, I was mostly talking about 3-4 games max to figure out game speed. Last year was really too close for comfort

The preseason record has zero correlation with the regular season. While I agree it was a frustrating game to watch, it's not likely indicative of what we'll see in the regular season.
People like to make fun of how seriously the Oilers take their preseason record, I'd argue a lot of fans here are no different... albeit with a much more pessimistic tone.

For me, this is it. You can't give up that goal, even if it was a hard shot. Both the second and third are stoppable, but not something you blame on the goalie. But if you give up bad goals, you change the complexion of the game.
Smith wasn't the reason they lost, but if he plays like that he'll never be the reason they win. If they'd won tonight (say, by actually having a power play to speak of) it would have been in spite of him.
Also, he let in four goals, not three. Though the disallowed one wasn't really on him, either.

I get that some people are over-reacting to the pre-season, but is everyone else really satisfied with their very mediocre play to date?
