"Erick died after an EXPECTED reaction to turmeric, a spice used in Indian food and in dietary supplements, that was dripped directly into her veins through an I-V."

I fixed the writing in their story. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Amazing their initial ruling is "accidental". If I did this to a patient I'd be charged with manslaughter at a minimum.

I would never trust my kid or any relatives to this stuff.

As I said these things annoy me because of the lack of basic scientific thought. It's not Turmeric but a minor constituent of turmeric that has been investigated and shown to have some promise in that regard. These people then make the jump to "Well that's in Turmeric and Turmeric is 'natural' and 'organic' so I can just inject this or an unverified extract of it into people".

My kids are 8 and 10...I work with them on a regular basis what it means to collect data, analyze data, and come to scientific conclusions. You know, teach critical thought. My mother-in-law hates that because she's a Reike "practitioner" and believes other nonsense. Well she hates that I will point blank call it crap and that there is no evidence but I'm sorry I will not have that stuff influencing my kids!

If only high schools did this. It would be the most important thing anyone learns.

True. And we're lucky in that we can send our kids to a school that take Science, Humanities and Arts all very seriously (every teacher has an education degree and degree in their discipline...for middle and upper school usually advanced degrees).

From first grade they have an actual true science class where they do little simple experiments, have the kids collect the data themselves and make conclusions based on the data. So my teaching now that they are exposed on a daily basis is usually limited to "is that proven? How would you do it in science class to test that? Has it been tested and if not why do you think it hasn't been? etc.."

Well not quite on that level or direct but you get it.

Which is good, but the problem is a sort of balkanization that leads people to think that mode of thinking only applies in the realm of science - particularly chemistry, biology, physics, the categories that kids are actually taught. What's needed more than anything is a broader "how to think clearly" education that hammers home things like "correlation does not imply causation", what tautologies, false dilemmas and circular reasoning are.

I don't disagree...I am more in tune with the science aspect as I'm a scientist and it's natural to me. That said, they do a lot of the same type of thinking in the humanity based courses at the school as well. One of my daughters workbook for English is called "reading comprehension and critical thought" or something.

and yes the football sucks...well actually doesn't exist! But the debate team....

			Too late Tamara Lovett...
	Quote:

"Every day I punish myself. I think about Ryan and I blame myself for not knowing better and for holding limiting beliefs that ultimately led to the death of my child," Lovett told her sentencing hearing Thursday as she wiped tears. "At the time, I thought I was doing the best for my child.

"I hope others learn from my ignorance, because these beliefs are no longer entrenched in my psyche and this has been a painful lesson."

Lovett gave her son dandelion tea and oil of oregano when he developed the infection that kept him bedridden in their Calgary home for 10 days in March 2013.

She testified at her trial that she thought Ryan had a cold or the flu, and she didn't think his swollen lymph nodes, an oozing ear infection and jaundiced eyes were anything she couldn't handle.

Alberta's chief medical examiner testified that the boy's body was full of group A streptococcus bacteria, which caused most of his major organs to fail.

"I now know better. Forgive me for my ignorance. It has cost me a loving son and there is a pain which will last forever," Lovett said Thursday.

I'd be fine with the sentence if she had to come out actively and speak at schools and events that are anti voodoo ######o medicine.

These people were selling all kinds of quack cures including promised cures for serious and debilitating mental illnesses.

I always have a lack of belief in a persons sincerity when they're facing a longer prison sentence and they blubber and apologize.

Let her prove that she's really changed and she's not just reading a statement written by her lawyer to get her off

I think there is still an outstanding appeal to the Court of Appeal by the prosecution asking for stiffer penalties. Not sure if that has been dealt with yet.
