Okay, I'll bite. Their jobs depend on the Flames. What do you expect? Rob Kerr has been the poster boy for this new arena and the biggest cheerleader on the Flames side.

Does anyone know what the ownership percentages are in CSEC? I mean, depending on that, it might not matter if 5/6 owners dont want to leave and one does.

Instead of spending $25 million on demolishing the Saddledome, can we spend $25 million on turning into a indoor amusement park / water park instead?

|
Because the City would have a building sitting there, with no tenant and no revenue?
If you are an owner and you have a commodity that people want, are you not going to try and squeeze every bit of value out of it? If Calgary and Quebec City are both available, are you not going to use those to negotiate? If Seattle has a team, are you not going to approach Portland, and try and get some interest out of them? You're going to do everything in your power to make sure that you get the absolute best deal for the money you are about to spend. We know Calgary will support a team, but what other earning opportunities are there? The other sites might offer sweeteners that make it worth your while, or you can use to drive the lease down.

As well, they carried the presser live start to finish, then talked about it for at least 45 minutes afterwards. There is only so much they can really say.

When I was a kid I used to go to Stamps games with one of the owners. I do know that the public's reaction to CalgaryNEXT (which I admit was rolled out really poorly), which was seen by the owners to be part of their legacy in this City, has been a huge disappointment for them. I blame King for much of what has happened.

I'm pretty excited about that.
|
The Flames have under-estimated the power of renderings and good design from the start. Renderings, if done well, get people excited and shift focus from hard facts to softer narratives that you can sell. It's important especially when your financial proposals are dubious at best.
As the wise business man Cosmo Kramer once said, you don't sell the steak, you sell the sizzle. It's doubly true when your steak is slightly rancid chuck.

I suspect there are standard ROFR and buy/sell provisions in their partnership agreement.

In fairness they've had a lot of opportunities to replace him and not done it. If you're not happy with the way one of your employees executes their task you have options.

So based on reading this thread it sounds like the Flame side is the one that wants the dome demolished? Has this been confirmed? If so, what is the reasoning? The City of Calgary owns the building.
I apologize if this has been answered already.

They don't want the competition for events.

Sure commit to building an arena and you might get on the list.
Otherwise, your not on a relocation list.

I doubt it. I get the impression that the higher-ups in the Flames organization are friends first, business partners second. I bet King golfs and has a pint with them. Kind of like a close-knit clique.

The suspicion is that they don't want another high capacity arena to compete against for non-CS&E properties.

Section 333.1 of Alberta's Municipal Government Act permits a municipality to enter into a "tax agreement" regarding property used for professional sports. A tax agreement is an agreement to accept an annual lump sum payment in lieu of property taxes.

Also firing King now is a non-starter from a negotiating point of view. They are between a rock. Surely they can't be blind to fact that he is damaging their cause.
