Nope.

When the inevitable "arrogant" + "whiney" + "headcase" + "sulker" labels come up with absolutely no facts to justify such sensationalized labels... dumb definitely applies. There's always a few in every discussion like this and it's definitely dumb.

We should really wait until we get the facts before making judgements on the player.

No. No, he has not. Bennett was drafted fourth and there are nine players from his draft class that have achieved higher offensive totals. He looks to be on track to me.

I could see bennett's camp putting the case forward that he'll take the low cap hit "show me" contract if he gets a chance to "show." Playing with guys like bouma and Brouwer last year might have been frustrating for him. And his camp could be concerned that he'll never get a chance to earn a big pay day at then end of the show me contract if he continues to play with depth guys instead of top six forwards. In that way, he could be asking for assurances that he'll get a chance to play either wing or centre in the top six/power play.

Listening to Kerr and Steinberg talk about this on the Fan is beyond irritating. They're ignoring Dreger's follow-up tweet, and just using the opportunity to gush about Backlund while saying "Bennett is a winger" over and over, and how contract term doesn't matter, and Bennett should just suck it up and sign a bridge contract...not even discussing whether or not the Flames are even offering a 1 or 2 year deal.

*grumble grumble grumble* I can't wait for the Athletic to launch in Calgary. More fully thought out analysis regarding the Flames is exciting.

No official announcement yet, but the Young Stars tournament in Penticton kicks off this Friday. So like previous years I would imagine it starts on Tuesday after it ends, on the 12th. Gives them about a week of practices before the preseason games start the following week on the 18th.

That was a great link.

If Gilmour didn't listen at the wall and sour on the Flames would have he reached his full potential with the Flames?

He would have been the #2C at best behind Niewendyk and possibly Reichel with Otto being the top checking centre? He was the clear #1C the minute he became a Leaf.

Gilmour goes on to describe how great it was to play for Coach Burns. Listening at the wall while ruining his focus for a year or so was great for his career.

Will Bennett reach his potential playing behind Monahan and Backlund?

This doesn't make much sense. Bennett's deal should be one of the easier ones to make since it will be a bridge deal. Perhaps the Flames are pushing hard for a 3 year deal and the Bennett camp only wants 1-2 years?

A 3 year deal works best with the Flames current cap stucture. If the Flames sign him for 2 years and he breaks out they could require upwards of $15M in cap space to keep Bennett and Tkachuk in 2 years. That would mean they would have to dump a few of Frolik, Brouwer, Stone, Hamonic, or Brodie.

63 points in 159 games. Under 0.4 PPG as a pro.

Sign your contract before camp, kid. Before Mark Jankowski steals your job and you do have to play the next two years as a winger.

Darren Dreger is awful. Why is he still employed?

I'm confident Bennett will get a deal done. If he goes to play in Europe so be it. That's not necessarily a threat, more of an option to keep him playing instead of sitting around doing nothing.

Brouwer played 7 less games and scored 1 less point than Bennett. Most people in this forum believe he shouldn't play in the NHL while at same point figuring Bennett deserves more money cause he is young and has talent.

I will always believe that you should be paid for what you do not your potential.
No Apollo Mission on that thought for you to miss. Once he starts putting bigger numbers up then he should be considered for a raise. If he want to sign a short contract to have more bargaining power after a couple good seasons all the power to him.
Jeez, based on my interpretation of the original post, yes, that person would class Brouwer as being elite in his field. Again, not by any measure other than the league he plays in. I didn't make that point, someone else did. That's not necessarily how I gauge 'elite'. Most people here think Brouwer had a down season and is on more than he should be. Not many think isn't an NHL player.

When it comes to today's NHL and successful youngsters, paying for what they do is not how it actually works. Prove it bridge deals are few and far between and cap management is a big part of any organisation who wants success. Giving a player more than they're currently worth in exchange for extra term where hopefully you're underpaying is a viable risk that GM's are willing to take. Are you saying you'd rather wait for a player like Roman Josi to be worth 7m than use all the predictive data you have to tie him down at 4ish? Potential is paid for on second contracts, what the players actually have achieved is paid for when they are about to hit UFA.

Do you think Draisatl and mcdavid got their deals because of one season? The oilers are paying them hoping they repeat that every single year of those deals. I saw some oilers fans suggest mcdavid should get 7 or 8 million on one year deals and that he shouldn't get paid any more until the oilers win the cup. That's a great way to unsettle a player and lose an asset. That appears to be the exact opposite of how every single GM in the league is operating. Except maybe Jim Benning.

It's up to Bennett to push those two behind him isn't it? To out play them, become better than them and force them to play behind him. Isn't that reaching his full potential?

Gilmour didn't win any cups as Toronto's top line centre. All he really achieved after leaving was getting kissed by Don Cherry.

What I think the most likely scenario is that the Flames want him for 3 years at 2.7 million per. That way it coincides with other expiring contracts yada yada.

Of course Bennett feels like he is on the verge of a breakout and would probably accept that 2.7 million dollars if it was a 1 year deal. However, because he likely feels that he'll be a 50+ point player sooner than later, he probably wants more towards 4 million if it's a 3 year deal.

This is all supposition on my part, but it does make some sense.

Just frustrating that they can't just get things done already so we don't have yet another player miss training camp like Gaudreau last year.

Would he risk injury over seas? Seems dumb.

Even if it's his agents idea, I don't like this distraction.

I'd be pretty open to trade if his value was higher; we are log jammed at c with Janko likely to make the team.

But any trade now will backfire. Good thing BT is a wiz, can't wait to see how comes out of this one.

It goes with the personality that says it, has for years. Always likes to take potshots at people where potshots are overkill or not required.
