Why not? CP is the place where dead horses can be beaten forever.

You cannot say something like this and not get into the debate as to whether he wants to be here or not. That's like saying I will be disappointed if I never learn to fly. If it isn't possible it doesn't make sense to get disappointed about it. That's what liberals do.

There is a substantial difference between forming opinions about how good or bad individual players are, or how well or poorly Jagr might fit into the Flames' plans this season than there is of adjudicating on their thoughts and motivations. I think it is fair to say that one might be concerned about how motivated Jagr is based on the fact that he is already 45-years-old, has already won Stanley Cups and appears to be chasing Gordie Howe's record—others have expressed as much without attempting to read minds. But by the same token Jagr's competitive nature and longevity also seem to suggest that he is concerned with his own legacy and would not wish to taint that by mailing in the last years of his incredible career.

Not sure if he is just picking up on the mass hysteria of Friedman's report or he has credible source, but Czech NHL reporter for Czech TV says most likely destination for Jagr is the Saddledome:

Air Yanover had a nice little article on signing Jagr a month ago at Flames Nation:

https://flamesnation.ca/2017/07/12/j...-lot-of-sense/

Quote:
s Jagr still a top line forward? Well, this past season he spent by far the most even strength ice time with Aleksander Barkov, and Jagr is a genetic freak even by professional athlete standards, so it’s entirely possible he is.

He can clearly still score; the only time he’s put up fewer than 40 points since his return to the NHL was in the lockout season, and even then he still scored 35. He’s a possession driver, putting up a 54.94% 5v5 CF in 2016-17 (+6.25% rel) albeit with 35.09% offensive zone starts. Alongside Barkov, they were a 57.0% CF duo, with 56.9% offensive zone starts. Separated, Jagr was 51.3% CF (50.5% offensive zone starts), while Barkov was 41.2% CF (34.1% offensive zone starts).

So Jagr can clearly drive play if he’s put in a position to succeed, and help boost a high-end young teammate do the same. But what of those zone starts?

To put them in perspective, this past season Johnny Gaudreau had 43.35% offensive zone starts, and Sean Monahan had 40.63%, so that’s not exactly an issue. If Jagr is expected to be a top line player, he’d almost certainly be alongside Gaudreau and Monahan – two 60+ point young forwards – and considering the way Glen Gulutzan deploys his forwards, Jagr would undoubtedly be put in a position to succeed. From there, all he’d have to do is keep up with a couple of players in their early 20s, which he’d already been doing during his time in Florida.

The Saddledome getting roasted by the Czechs:

If Jagr is close I'd imagine Bennett is as well. Announcing Bennett and Jagr back to back would be really exciting. And I know everyone wants to see 68 with 23 and 13 but my mind would explode if it was 19 - 93 - 68

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkahuck - Bennett - Jagr
Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Stajan - Brouwer

Extra - Curtis Lazar, Freddie Hamilton

Injuries will happen and you won't get through training camp without at least one up front. To me, that's one heck of a good forward group.

I find the wording of the poll off. I would still want him for the year with an UNREASONABLE deal. As long as Bennett is taken care of, and he fit under the cap.

A remarkably Orange Julius-y rumor from reddit.

This is going to sound absolutely bonkers, and really unreliable because I do not have the guys name nor like remember anything about it, but all I remember was this guy came into where I work and we got to talking about the flames, he said that he has a buddy who works for the flames in some capacity, and the guy who works with the flames told his buddy and his buddy told me that Jagr was going to happen, or at least the talks were incredibly concrete and a very real possibility. This was almost 3 weeks ago... I know this sounds completely ridiculous with me not having a clue about this guy or the guy he knows with the Flames, but all I remember is him telling me that when I hear the news broken of Jagr to the Flames, I could say I heard it from him first. I thought baloney man that aint happening, but its the only thing that stuck with me from that conversation... so HYPE IT UP.

I agree somewhat, although with the way management has been talking I highly doubt Lazar is the extra forward. I'd replace Jankowski with Lazar and I think that makes a lot of sense. Playing with Frolik and Backlund will give Lazar the best chance to succeed, it'll give him a chance to regain his confidence and it will also allow management to see what they actually have in Lazar. Love the idea of Tkachuk with Bennett... I think I'd switch Jagr and Ferland though.

According to CapFriendly, the Flames currently have just under $7.2M in cap space, including Bartkowski's contract. If we exclude him (because I don't think he's guaranteed a spot), it's just under $7.8M with 11 forwards, 5 defence, and 2 goalies.

The bottom 2 defence roles will likely go to two of Kulak, Wotherspoon, Bartkowski, and Andersson. Healy and Kylington could also make a push with a strong preseason. We don't know what Kulak and Wotherspoon will sign for but I expect them both to come in between $650,000 and $850,000. Regardless, I'd say it's safe to assume the bottom 2 d-men will be paid between $1.3M and $1.5M total.

If we go with $1.5M to be safe, that leaves $6.3M for 3 forwards.

The 14th forward will come in between $650,000 (Hathaway or Gazdic) and $925,000 (Jankowski or Foo). If we assume the high end of that range, it leaves $5.35M for Bennett and one more forward.

Giving Jagr $3.7M straight-up wouldn't work because that would leave only $1.65M for Bennett.

They could get creative with bonuses similar to Iginla's deal with Boston, but that would create its own problems. Tkachuk is already likely to earn a decent amount of bonus money which could carryover. The cap isn't likely to increase much next year, and the only significant contract that the Flames have ending next year is Stajan's and most of his money will likely go to re-signing Backlund.

Agreed and that's why they're likely to have F. Hamilton and Bartkowski as extras because they are at league minimum, and go with only 22 players.

If Wotherspoon is smart he demands league minimum and not a penny more so he's in the game as well.

Do that and they have 6.3M to spend (including buy outs etc) for Bennett and Jagr.

Bennett at 2.25 for 2 years leaves the 4 required to get Jagr done but it's tight.

I would love to see Bennett with Jagr and Tkachuk.

Fun fact - Jagr was a two-time Stanley Cup and Art Ross winner before Bennett was even born.

True... but Tkachuk/Bennett dinged us on bonus overages this season so that's not a new expense and we're getting 1M back from the Raymond buyout ending after this season so that helps some. We may have only Stajan's contract ending next year but that covers Backlund's raise and Jankowski's (presumeably) base and we won't have any real upward cap pressure until the 2019-2020 season since the core is locked up (and any overage from Jagr won't affect that).

2019-2020 is going to be a PITA from a cap management stand point. Treliving may have to buyout Brouwer (and maybe Stone) at that point.

Not sure you need to buy out a 29 year old 6'3" defenseman making 3.5M

The beauty of the set up right now is the fact that they have two very tradeable assets in Hamonic and Stone should young players make a huge push.
