Lest We Forget
In Flanders Fields
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

Thank you for posting that on here. That poem really has historical significance for Canadians and makes me homesick too because people don't wear them here. Here's a lil story of how I made a new hockey loving friend here just because of the poppy:
Yesterday, I was walking to work, and walked right past a lady wearing a poppy. Cuz I meet so few Canadians here, I got super excited, turned around and asked her where in Canada she was from. She said "Calgary". I said, "sweet, I'm from Alberta too, grew up in Fort Mac". She said "oh, you're prolly an Oilers fan then"...and we proceeded to have our own lil BOA conversation/debate, right in the middle of the street in San Jose. That's Canadians for you You guys prolly think thats dumb, but i rarely run into true hockey lovers....so it was awesome

Not dumb at all. My wife and I sometimes accost people with Canadian flags on their shirts, backpacks or bumpers, just to enjoy that moment of camaraderie.
And Remembrance Day is an example of how I think we celebrate our veterans better than Americans do. Here, Veterans' Day isn't nearly the event that Remembrance Day is--and there's a sense of wonder and ceremony and respect that comes from the moment of silence and listening to taps, etc. that Americans totally lack. To them honouring veterans is about cotton candy and fireworks. To us it's about quiet reflection. I like our way better.

I went to the Museum of the Regiments this morning. It was an emotional moment when Captain Nicola Goddard's family laid a wreath.

Is that the correct line? Isn't it supposed to be "grow"?
