I wasn't really appreciating the procedural nuance of what happened with the skinny repeal vote or McCain's strategy here, but this - assuming it's correct - was a helpful explanation.

I'm definitely going to assume McCain flew up there purely with the intention of voting yes on the procedural vote only to get Trump's hopes up then completely screw him over. Not w that's a hell of a last thing he might ever do in politics.

In other related Trump news:

Boy Scouts apologise for Donald Trump 'drunken stepdad' speech

"The Chief Scout Executive for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has released a statement apologising for Donald Trump’s politically charged speech at the National Jamboree.

Michael Surbaugh wrote: “I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree. That was never our intent.

Donald Trump's Boy Scouts speech broke with 80 years of tradition
"We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.

“While we live in a challenging time in a country divided along political lines, the focus of Scouting remains the same today as every day.

“Trustworthiness, loyalty, kindness and bravery are just a few of the admirable traits Scouts aspire to develop – in fact, they make up the Scout Oath and Scout Law."

Before anyone gets their hopes up, I'd question this "one reconciliation bill per topic per year" rule. Where does it come from and how enforceable is it? There used to be a rule allowing filibusters of judicial nominees until it got scrapped and I've read recently that some Republican senators believed they could ignore the Parliamentarian if she blocked parts of the bill from the reconciliation process.

The Trump presidency has done nothing if not shown just how many of these so-called rules, norms and laws can be ignored or changed.

So Mooch decides to do an eight ball interview. Healthcare repeal dies. Trump whines a bunch. Mooch's wife divorces him ostensibly for wanting to suck Trump's #### to advance his career. And Reince gets fired on the tarmac in humiliating fashion....but he didn't sign the NDA...what did we do to deserve this wonderful last 24 hours?

Bannon is probably the next to go. I think Bannon thought he was using Trump to get hit foot in the WH but pretty clear that Trump was using Bannon for votes from unhinged right. Now that he doesn't need that, he's going to consolidate power within his inner-circle of family members, business allies, and sycophants. The one problem with that is that he doesn't seem to have policy wonk in that group or someone that can help him successfully navigate Congress.

The quote itself is from Reddit, but you can read more about it here.

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-polit...tion-explained

Key paragraph:
Quote:
There’s also a strict limit on how often Congress can use budget reconciliation. Basically, it’s limited to one spending/revenue bill per year, or per budget resolution. “Under Senate interpretations of the Congressional Budget Act, the Senate can consider the three basic subjects of reconciliation — spending, revenues, and debt limit — in a single bill or multiple bills, but it can consider each of these three in only one bill per year,” the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities’ David Reich and Richard Kogan write. “This rule is most significant if the first reconciliation bill that the Senate takes up affects both spending and revenues. Even if that bill is overwhelmingly devoted to only one of those subjects, no subsequent reconciliation bill can affect either revenues or spending because the first bill already addressed them.”
So they could technically do it sooner than a year if they pas another budget resolution, apparently.

Because the reconciliation process is tied up with the budget process (i.e there actually could be more than one bill, if Congress passed another budget resolution), I don't know if it's as simple as changing a senate rule. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congre...ol_Act_of_1974

It might require a change to law to change the reconciliation process.

Before we get too busy giving McCain a medal, lets all be reminded that he and Pence were locked in negotiations for quite some time before he cast his vote. McConnell was also confident he had the votes to get this back to the House, and that Pence was going to cast the tie breaker to make that happen. The look on McConnell and McCain's faces said it all. I don't think there was some master plan to this than McCain or anyone else cooked up.

Part of me thinks that these idiots are positioning themselves so that they won't have a "next job."

I'm not convinced that Trump et al are going to leave the White House voluntarily when they get voted out (or in 7 years, or upon impeachment, or whatever).

I like the 538 theory that McCain was deciding how to vote than trump tweeted how great it was that they were fixing healt care at 10:43pm then McCain said he made up how mind at 11.

So he is considering how to vote, Trump starts celebrating and McCain says #### him.
