Smith is going to be fine and a great stop gap for two years. The panic is laughable. He's been playing for a brutal Coyotes team and he managed to put up average numbers.

He's going to make the odd mistake and give up a couple of bad goals from over playing the puck, but I also fully expect to see our transition game starting from the back end improve. Elliott was a horrible puck handler. At least this guy will take some pressure off the defence. Cost of acquisition was minimal and Arizona are eating a chunk of his salary.

We'll be fine.

Those examples are bottom of the league teams taking a flyer on an up and coming, but still unproven, goaltender, because they are used to being trampled on in the sewers of the league. For them, there wasn't much of a risk, other than the status quo, of passing the reins to someone's backup goaltender.

As for Treliving's Flames, who made the playoffs early in a rebuild, 2 out of the past 3 years, despite shooting blanks on goaltenders each year, there was much more at stake to again trust a goaltender that has yet to prove he can bear the workload of a starter.

Mrazek may have had a bad year, with a .901 S% and 3.04 GAA, but that is after posting a .918 and .921 S% and 2.38 and 2.33 GAA in back to back years. When things went sideways for Mrazek this season, there was concern internally about his response. Rather than digging in and trying to work his way out of it, Mrazek, according to multiple sources, soured and placed the blame elsewhere.

Mrazek was shopped before the expansion draft protection lists were solidified and there wasn’t serious interest. A big reason for that was because teams would have had to protect him in the expansion draft and at $4 million, it wasn’t enough of an upgrade over their current goalies to pull the trigger. Calgary, a team that showed some interest, opted for Mike Smith as the goalie they wanted in the short term to try and win games while also working with the young, talented goalies coming in the Flames organization.

A source from another team that needs a goalie said they were less worried about Mrazek’s work ethic and more worried about his ability to consistently stop pucks. He doesn’t have prototypical NHL goalie size and relies on his strong athleticism to make saves, something that hasn’t happened consistently enough lately.

Judging by the moves Treliving has made for our goalies, it's obvious that he believes the answer to our goaltending is through Gillies/Rittich/Parsons. If the basis of his expectations is such, then that would lead to him being involved specifically with short term goalies (Fleury, Smith). That's not to say that he obviously didn't do his homework in seeing the relative cost of bringing on a long term starter (Bishop, Jones, Talbot and Murray since before 2015-16 I believe) but due to cost, lack of interest from the other party and/or the development shown by our prospects, the next best route was to use those assets on other places (Hamonic) and let the goalie situation play itself out.

Sounds terrible to just hope things go well but the alternative is likely paying a high price for rolling a long term dice on Grubauer, Raanta etc and not having Hamonic. If you believe that's a better choice, sure. Either way you're still gambling.

Considering the Flames situation, with no goalies for this year, and a fantastic group of prospects that aren't quite ready yet, my hope was a two year deal for a starter, plus one of the younger guys that were available as a 1b with a chance of being part of the longer term solution.. IF that could be done at a reasonable price.

That was the dream.

What did Treliving do? He got a solid #1 For two years and got a cheap backup for one year - who could easily be replaced by one of the prospects if they earn it.

And he got BOTH of them for About $5.7m and a 2nd.

I wouldn't say he knocked it out of the park, but I would say that this is pretty awesome. Almost a perfect solution for the current situation.

Yup, hope the moves play out well for us. But I still have reservations about both players and refuse to be a sycophant because the Flames made the move. I didn't like Smith as a coyote, and I still don't like him as a Flame. Same with Lack. Excuse me if I believe that Treliving did not address our goaltending concerns in a manner consistent with the way he addressed the other positions.

Just a general comment on Treliving: This year at least it seems as though he's dealing assets at their highest.

Dealing picks at / near the draft.

Dealing cap-space near the opening of UFA.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him deal a bubble player (for us) during training camp while teams are solidifying their rosters.

He's literally taking the other GMs to school. Not just players have highs-and-lows. So do picks. So does cap space. Nice work Tree!

Treliving has assembled a great defense on paper. Hell of a job. Still have to see what he's doing up front. Still some contracts to get done with the RFAs. Man, they have to be excited about the developments and motivated to get signed.

That's not true. They've still got room and even if they didn't, they can go over the cap now and worry about getting under later.

Based on estimations for Bennett, Ferland, Lazar and Kulak, there is about $3.5 million left.

Sharp likely isn't coming with a big cap hit or term, especially being 35 and coming off major injury. Probably be a bonus laden 1 year deal if it happens.

Yeah, but that's 9.8 cap space for 6 roster spots.
If those four cost 6, and you are 750k for the other, you still only have 3 million left.
And those 4 will cost more like 7 than 6,imo
