I like "win now" mode much better than "win someday mode".
Much more entertaining off-seasons. Like that one year we got Oli Jokinen and Jay Bouwmeester and I started saying crazy outlandish things like: "that's it, we just won the Stanley cup"...good times.

Yeah I remember in '09 when we had Jbo, Regehr, Dion, Cammalleri, Iggy and then added Jokinen at the deadline and he potted 2 goals in his first period en route to a 5-1 win or something like that. Many people I knew were proclaiming the Flames cup favourites that spring.

Perhaps one of the best reasons for it is that it's a great counter-balance to the oilers who are mounting a hugely offensive top line...

Your memory fails you djs
Jbo wasnt there in 09 when they added Jokinen and Cammy was gone when they brought in Jbo

Not something "we can just recoup later".

Lots of time to acquire picks in general, not specifically 1st rounders or 2nds even.

Anyways, that 2009/10 team that had a stacked D cant be compared to now. That top 4 D cost more than this one and the cap was way lower then too. Plus that team had mostly aging forwards compared to this team whos highest scoring forwards are mostly under 25.

How would you guys rank: 09' (Bouw, Reggie and Dion) to '17 (Gio, Brodie, Dougie and Hamonic)?
Gio
Brodie
Hamilton
Bouw
Reggie
Hamonic
Phaneuf
??
It's kind of muddy after the top 2...

Another comment I would make on Hamonic is that I expect he will fit very well in the Flames dressing room. By all accounts the Flames had a fairly tight room last year and I think Hamonic will fit in very well - especially after losing a quality guy like Engelland, you want to replace him with a similar quality person.

You end up with a wealth of assets at a certain position and are forced to trade a good player for picks/prospects due to the cap or just overwhelming depth
Now imagine with me for a second that three of Valimaki, Andersson, Fox and Kylington turn out within the next few years. What the heck are you going to do with Gio, Hamilton, Brodie and Hamonic plus the 3 above? You have to deal somebody at some point due to the cap. There might be cases where we're up against the cap and set at the other positions so we trade a defenceman for picks/prospects
Or imagine if Jankowski and Bennett both really turn out well. Flames might have to deal a young forward in 4-5 years due to cap reasons. And maybe at that point we grabs picks/prospects because we can't add salary
Now I'm not suggesting above scenarios are likely to happen. But if you want a hypothetical involving the Flames as contenders making a trade to recoup 1sts there's a couple unlikely but feasible scenarios.

irrelevant!
but i know that's not too fun.
who's on your all time expansion draft protected list?
who would win in a fight, scorch or mr. met?
who would you rather have with you in a foxhole, wideman or zyuzin?
you've got one question to go on who wants to be a millionaire. do you phone adrian aucoin or deryk engelland?
let's just win a pile of games and see what happens

Thats all well and good...problem is that in the next 2 drafts the Flames are down 4 picks in the first 3 rounds including nothing til round 4 next year.
Thats why when i see "lots of time to recoup picks" thrown about, it makes me cringe because the only way that happens is if the team starts to sell off some players...which means the season isnt going well.
Im of the opinion that this team still needs some holes filled up front and why i hated the acquisition cost of Hamonic as the currency to help up front has entirely disappeared in the last week.

What spots do they need filled? Top line RW? Treliving has said he likes Ferland in that spot - so there's a good chance that's the plan. What's left?
3rd LW to play with Bennett and Lazar? Seems to me we have a good number of depth wingers in the system already and that spot seems easily addressable in free agency.

It seems like thats the obvious one, or we could call him 'Harmonica' although thats less tough and ominous but perhaps indicates that he can play people like an instrument.

Plus the benefit of calling Hamonic Hammer is that you can then call the Hamiltons "the Hammies" because of how each of their first names end.

I think I'd like to see Jankowski in that spot. Rotate Lazar/Brouwer and see who works out the best. I think we're all set on forwards, we have too many as it is.
