Yes, but "two firsts" have lots of risk attached to them and that is often overlooked.

Well regardless, what the Flames need is a dose of magic out of one of their prospects. It happens, why not to us?

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Keep in mind folks, those 2 firsts would be this years 16OA (obviously) and you would assume (or take the risk of) next year's being 20-31OA.
Its not like next year we're getting the 1OA and if we are a lot more went wrong than a bad trade.

I really hope we stockpile picks and prospects. I would be quite angry if #16 is moved for anyone.

Why are you more concerned about improving 5 years from now than now?

whats the story with Pribyl anyway? I know he had significant injuries last year, has he healed and will he be ready for camp? Flames seem pretty high on him developing.

From what I've heard, he should be good to go for Development Camp and Training Camp.

Or maybe he's more interseted in icing a contending team for a long period of time.

Agree. To much worries about trading the pick this year IMO. Seems like the perfect year to just make a trade for the now.
Weaker draft year. Lots of player movement due to expansion. Most of the top end young players are maturing into their primes.
The deal has to make sense but if you can move the 1st for a player in that age 22-25 group that helps you right now you have to look at it.
Make a trade like the Dougie Hamilton trade again 10 time out of 10.

Umm Gaudreau is an elite scoring winger and was a 4th rounder. Brodie is a top pairing D on most teams and was a 4th rounder.
Ferland was a 5th rounder as well.

At some point you have so many young players and prospects that you could never put them all on the same team together. We're pretty much at that point. We're asset rich. We don't need to be in the picks/prospects asset accumulation phase anymore. We can move some picks/prospects for help now and we'll still have notable picks/prospects left. The cupboards won't be bare if we deal our 1st this year.

That's what the Flames have been doing since 2013 when they decided to rebuild finally.
Picked 11 times in the 1st two rounds of the last 4 drafts. That's +3 for those two rounds and that doesn't include the 1st and two 2nds we dealt to get a 21 year old Dougie Hamilton.
We also had 9 picks in last years draft, which is more than we've had in any draft since 2004 when they still had 9 rounds. Flames also had one of the youngest teams in the AHL, if not the youngest, and they made the playoffs despite being in a division filled with veteran laden teams.
I hope we pick at #16 too, because it's fun. But if Tre can get a player that helps take the team to the next level, and will be a part of it for a while then I'm all for it.

Even if you feel our window to go for it is in the next 3 years, whoever you pick now will be involved in a trade to improve in 3 years.
If the deal makes sense and is for a 22-26 year old player, you absolutely make that move.
Now, if we are trading picks for 30+ year old players, that is a different story.

Duha on the FAN said he would shop Ferland to Vegas for a top 4 if Hamonic falls through
He does say he would go hard after Hamonic though

I wouldn't trade Ferly. Too hard to find young, effective powerfowards.
I usually like Duha's analysis but I've disagreed with a few of his takes in this segment. Don't see how CHI took as big of a step back as he seems to think they did.

Yeah, I view Ferly as one of the players who is going to out perform whatever his next contract is and act as the 3rd piece on our 1st line for years to come.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland is a line I think the Flames are committed to after seeing how it performed in the 2nd half of last season.
Agreed on Chicago as well. I am on board with his thoughts regarding Stepan though - Stepan at 6.5M is a bad contract.

After his second full NHL season it is probably premature to draw conclusions on exactly what sort of player Ferland is.

Monahan is a nice player but as has been said in this thread he's no Crosby or Malkin and Conner Sheary scored 23 goals/53 points and happens to be the exact same age as Ferland. I know you love to bring up that Ferland got off to a late start to his career but that doesn't really matter in a sport where peak performance is tied to physical age regardless of if you started paying at 6 years old or 14 years old. Even if he progresses to say 20 goals and 35 points (being realistic not pie in the sky) that's not ideal production for a first line winger. Flames have five years left with Gaudreau on the roster and it would be a shame to waste those years with makeshift line mates.
