I'm thinking about it less from the perspective of what happened to other teams and more from the perspective of the relative pain from losing any one player.

Kulak is the best Flames asset that was expansion eligible. That's why it hurts. If Chiasson, Bouma, Shinkaruk, Brouwer, or whomever else was taken it's be better than losing Kulak.

So be it. Ultimately the proof is in the pudding, if McPhee takes Kulak then he agrees that Kulak was the best player available.

That's true if you're operating on the assumption that the Flames could convince Vegas to take Brouwer in the draft in return for also receiving Kulak and another asset (likely a 1st or 2nd round pick). Vegas has clearly made a lot of deals to take some cap dumps so your deal has to be as good or better than a bunch of other deals out there. Vegas can only take on so much of the league's unwanted cap hits.

You're also assuming that, just because Vegas takes Kulak today, there's no deal in place to move Brouwer in the coming weeks. Vegas could take on a cap hit of $5.5M then flip it to Calgary for Brouwer at $4.5M in order to gain the assets from the original cap dump and then pass along the extra $1M to Calgary. That's probably the most likely scenario in which Brouwer is moved when you look at all the rumoured cap dumps already going to Vegas.

Come on man. The kid has played a total of 30 NHL games sporadically over the last three years. We have no idea at all what he is or can become playing a pretty difficult position in the NHL.

If you wrote off every defenceman in the league that didn't look fantastic after 30 games you'd have a pretty short list of players left over.

In a lackluster draft year. They should have taken one of the established young players the Islanders made available for the expansion draft.
