Here's a few more modern rock songs that have a reference to Canadiana:

A couple that I don't think have been mentioned yet would be:
Leave it Alone - Moist
Temptation - The Tea Party
Drinking in LA - Bran Van 3000
Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai
Raise a little hell - Trooper
Man I used to be - k os
Crabbuckit - k os
Leaving on a Jet Plane - Chantal Kreviazuk (she actually has a lot of songs that I think are pretty good and I could watch her videos for hours)

I'm a big fan of Tom Russell, but... I don't think he's Canadian. Plays a lot of shows here, did a lot of collaboration with Ian Tyson, but I'm pretty sure he was born and raised in the US and has lived there most of his life.

There is only one best "best Canadian song of all time," and it is this song:

NSFW!

I stand corrected. I had always assumed he was Canadian from listening to his songs.

Yeah, she nailed it. Even Leonard Cohen said after that, he considered it her song. KD Lang has an incredible voice and is a Canadian icon IMO.

Suprised to see no love for Alberta's Corb Lund.

A favourite of mine that he did with American singer Hayes Carl

Spoiler!

I'm surprised no one mentioned Paul Brandt yet. Unless I missed it. My favorite highway sing along artist.

if you could read my mind - gordon lightfoot

also my answer to the saddest song ever written (HM for no one- paul mccartney)

"when you reach the part where the heartache comes, the hero would be me.
but heroes often fail.
and you won't read that book again because the ending's just too hard to take.
I don't know where we went wrong but the feeling's gone and i just can't get it back."

In a few years, he will probably be the top of a lot of lists. Really unique artist.

Grimes is another Canadian musician that is criminally underrated IMO.

Spoiler!
horse soldier is a remarkable concept album capped by off by his closing revisit to the opening track 'i wanna be in the cavalry'. Always loved the juxtaposition between the glory at stake, and the horror of the following battle.

corb's work is often categorized as nursery rhymish but he can write the heavy heart like few contemporary country artists can.

'one left in the chamber' i always thought of as a suicide song

"There's the one that kept me guessin'
The one who's name I shall not say
There's the one I couldn't lose and then I lost it anyway

There's the one I ended up in
The one that ended all too soon
And the one left in the chamber oughta do"

but later i realized it's more of an old yeller song about putting down a horse

"There's the one I broke too easy
There's the one I couldn't break
There's the one I took to much of
There's all the #### I couldn't take"

Spoiler!

thankfully he penned a doozy of a suicide song already 'heavy and leaving'

"These hands have always been too slow in the past
Reluctance greeted nearly every task
Now my old heart tells me he wants it done fast
Discouraged fingers they resist to the last"

Spoiler!

his song 'a game in town like this' is the only song i can think of that goes out to the throngs of suckers parked at a VLT or slot machine at 10 AM on a tuesday.

"Stuck in chilly morning traffic cuz I always played too long
Headed north across the bridge and wish'n you were there at home
You used to wake all sleepy headed and ask me if I won
Sometimes I'd just say nothing and now I'm living with what I've done.

I'm a losin' lately gambler but that's not all I've ever been
Cuttin' back your losses is just another way to win."

Spoiler!

long post i know, but i guess i just mean to say that the guy deserves a little credit for stepping into darker and unchartered waters.

I had no idea who he was and then saw him at Hillside Festival 10 years ago when I was in university. He was really fun live! One of the few country music singers I can name off the top of my head who I like.
