I think he is absolutely awful, just got lucky to be a half starter. Right place, right time.

World Championship stats:

183 minutes played. 1.31 GAA, 0.941 saving %

Pickard seems decent.

Pickard's a tough one. He had two really decent years as the back up in Colorado, but then was thrust into the starting role due to Varlamov injuries behind a historically bad team.

That would be tough on a strong veteran goalie, never mind a young guy with 26 NHL starts on his resume before the 2016/17 season.

Pretty average. There are better options.

Because he has sported some good numbers in the second-rate WC? The vast majority of players there are no where near NHL calibre. This doesn't seem like a very good barometer of NHL ability. Hell, two years ago when Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent Hopkins played in the WC, they looked like burgeoning superstars.

You realize 50 of those games were played behind the 2016/17 Avalanche right?

The team that made the oilers from any of the previous ten seasons blush.

I wouldn't want Pickard as our starter, but I would take him as a back up behind a reliable starter without hesitation.

Yeah, the thing that detracts from Pickard's resume is an inability to dominate at any level. He has been playing professional hockey for five years now, and has never looked any better than average as a starter. In his best AHL seasons he posted SPs of only 0.917 and 0.918.

I guess, but I wouldn't put too much weight on that honestly.

Tuukka Rask played 100+ AHL games and only had a .911 sv%
Pekka Rinne played 147 AHL games and only had a .910 sv%

When I watch Pickard play, I see a pretty good goalie. And his NHL numbers very impressive the first two years, then he got forced behind one of the worst teams of the modern NHL era.

looks like Slovenia and Italy will go straight back down.
The top 14 remain the top 14 for an 11th consecutive year.

It's going to take Korea to break the streak next year.

Johnny owning Slovakia. Beauty give and go goal with Hayes. Nice dish from behind the net to Dvorak.

Where was this Johnny in the playoffs? Looks fantastic playing over there on the big ice. Doesn't even look like the same player we saw in 4 games against the Ducks.

Well yeah. Johnny's effort was fine in the playoffs but this style of game is much more suited to him. That's something he's going to need to figure out.

Johnny was fine in the playoffs. Him, Monahan and Ferland dominated the Kesler line statistically, but they shot 0% 5v5. That's going to happen when you're dealing with a sample size of 4 games.

He was there, he just had nobody at a high skill level like him on the Flames to play with.

The Hayes Gaudreau chemistry is real.

Gaudreau now has 9 points in 6 games and is tied for the tournament lead in goals with 6.

His decision making was very poor which had nothing to do with who played with. People really have a hard time criticizing Johnny.

Hayes doesn't have a particularly high skill level. Tournaments with very little physical play and obstruction is perfect for players like Gaudreau. Hopefully the NHL cracks down on the slashes next season so the skilled players are allowed to play their games.

Some people are completely devoid of context.

Did Johnny have a poor series vs Anaheim? Yes. So did most of the team.

It happens.

For reference / context

Johnny in 4 games vs Anaheim:

4GP 0G 2A = 2P -4

Pat Kane vs. Nashville:

4GP 1G 1A = 2P -4

It happens. Players will have tough match ups, a bad stretch, run into hot goalies etc.

Asking "where was this Johnny" while watching him tear it up on a larger Ice surface against teams with only a handful of NHL players - and comparing it with a playoff series against one of the hottest teams in the NHL is a mind numbing question completely devoid of context.

Jesse Pullijarvvii is a healthy scratch today today vs Switzerland.
