Will the Flames still have his rights? Afaik because there is no transfer agreement with the KHL, a team has a drafted player's rights until UFA, correct? As opposed to if a player is in Sweden for example, where there is a transfer agreement, so you only get 4 years of rights post draft.

I like your "glass half full view of this."
Unfortunately I think he's a goner.

Never coming over. He's never even been to a development camp. Oh well.

I think we have until he's 26 or 27 or something... hopes aren't high but door not closed.

It'll actually be hilarious if he ever comes over.
It's not like we're in huge need of him, but still... "here, have a star KHL defenseman for free!"

I meant that he's a star in the K.

Powerplay Quarterback

Hogstrom earned $225k in the AHL this year.
If we liken Rafikov to Hogstrom as a top pairing, jack of all trades dman in a strong euro league, Rafikov is probably earning twice that in the KHL.
There's probably no chance that he comes to NA to play for the Flames given the current amount of backend depth.

Not a good quote:

Quote:
“He was sorta the man of mystery,” said Treliving, when asked about Rafikov’s status. “It started off with ‘I need another year back there’, then ‘OK, I’m going to go back for another year.’ But then there wasn’t a lot of engagement in terms of wanting to come over. Then when we’d go over and watch him, his development had stagnated.”
So chances are, he will never be signed, not unlike a lot of seventh-round picks.

LOL.
Quote:
He remains Flames property and with no agreement between the NHL and the Russian Federation, there’s no expiry when it comes to how long Russian players remain property of the NHL club, who drafted or traded for their rights. Called defective status, they just remain on that list for as long as they continue to play in Russia and with no downside to just leaving them there.
|
Oh, he's defective all right.

Plus he now gets Craig MacTavish as a coach.
Serves him right!

MacTavish got fired after 8 games with Loko with a 3-5 record.
What is interesting is that Rafikov got 3g and 1a in those 8 games. Which is significant because his career high in the KHL is 5g in 48gms.
Kind of curious if he keeps it up with a new coach or if this offensive outburst is a flash in the pan.

I'm guessing that under MacTavish, he didn't have to play any defense anymore.
