I think it will be Shinkaruk. Being an expansion team they need to select some younger skilled guys like Hunter and hope they can turn into capable top-9 NHL players. Brouwer would be my 2nd choice because off McPhee. I don't see the point of them selecting Stajan. Picking Stajan provides no benefit for them long-term.

So unless Vegas thinks he will sneak through waivers, doesn't care they might lose him on waivers, or think he will be a full time NHLer for them, it makes it less likely they will select him.
Shinkaruk is exempt for 4 years or 160 NHL games played. He's only played 3 years and 15 NHL games, so I'd say he's exempt this coming season.

Brouwer could even be an expansion team captain: connection to GMGM, worn an A here, respected figure in the room and not too far removed from goal scoring exploits (enough to suggest a bounce-back)

This makes sense. Stajans cap hit wouldn't be much of an issue since he's only signed for 1 year anyway.

Shinkaruk hasn't proved much at the NHL level, but he's probably as good a stopgap as they'll get outside the UFA market, and he still has time to develop into an everyday NHLer.
Good argument.

However, if you're looking for a stopgap top 6 guy, I think Versteeg fits the bill much better. Would also provide experience. Of course there's no way of knowing how interested Versteeg is in signing in Vegas. Guaranteed top 6 spot with plenty of powerplay time often interests players, but Vegas isn't likely to challenge for anything in the recent future.

In any case I voted 'A Flames UFA', simply because Stone, Engelland and Versteeg are IMO the best guys on our list.

I think it will be a forward, based on better D talent available from the rest of the league. Voted Brouwer, because of the McPhee connection and the honest belief he will be better next year.

Brouwer for me. I can see McPhee taking a flyer on him. They'll need some NHL players.

Other teams have better young players exposed. LV will take one of the vets from the Flames.

Porier is on the list. Did he return to Stockton? Was anything further ever disclosed on his situation? If Vegas know as little as we do on his situation they wouldn't select him.

I went with Brouwer but it might be wishful thinking. There is the McPhee connection, he is a veteran with some leadership skills and name recognition, and although overpaid the contract money and term is not ridiculous.

It could also be Stajan due to similar reasons as Brouwer or Shinkaruk if Vegas wants to gamble on a younger player. I don't think they will go with Kulak as there will be plenty of #4-7 Dmen available.

Nope.

When I did my mock draft thread earlier, there was a whole HOST of quality defensemen for them to choose from. Engelland would probably be an 8th or 9th defenseman for them, so I doubt he signs there. I think odds are better that he re-signs in Calgary than him signing in Vegas.

No. One player from each team. Even if there isn't any player you really want, you might as well still take someone. It's a free asset you can use somewhere down the line.

In the past, teams received draft pick compensation if they lost a player to a UFA signing. As a result, some teams took players in the expansion draft who they knew were going to sign somewhere else as a UFA just to get the compensatory pick. For example, Nashville took Richter from the Rangers in the expansion draft only to see him sign back with the Rangers as a UFA a couple weeks later.

It's likely that we'll see Vegas flip some players they get in the expansion draft for draft picks.

Why are people picking Emile Poirier? While I certainly hope the young man resolves his personal issues, but there's no guarantee he returns to professional hockey.

Good argument.

The trouble is, Versteeg is at the age where he has nowhere to go but down. Shinkaruk could be a stopgap top-6 forward right away, and if his development goes reasonably well, he could be a legitimate top-6 forward in a couple of years. Age matters, especially when you're building a team that is unlikely to contend for several years.

Anyway, I very much doubt McPhee is planning to claim UFAs in the expansion draft unless there's one exposed who is just too good to resist. He'll have his shot at UFAs on July 1, like everyone else – and all kinds of cap room to play with. I expect him to look at drafting 30 actual assets – players under contract or RFAs – which he can keep or use as trade bait, as desired.
