Possibly our most important FA signing.

Look, I'm assuming this was in response to my earlier post since you commented directly to that post early. Allow me to respond. I'm a grown man and I try not to argue with fellow members here. We're all fans of the same team yet some folks spend way too much time on here looking for "told ya so" and "gotcha" moments.
I felt like there was a lot of negativity swirling around the organization. The team was being criticized by national media about Treliving, the bad calls in the playoffs, the sweep by the Ducks, the Honda curse, wideman's lawsuit, the negative article in the Sun regarding the new arena...
If you don't feel like we were getting beat up a bit publicly and there was a bit of a cloud hanging over this team then that's fine. I did though, and I would imagine I'm not entirely alone with that perception.
You're smug comment above kinda irked me. I would normally ignore it and if I got the tone wrong I apologize but maybe take a look at your posts real quick before you hit send.
Is it necessary to go after a fellow Flames fan like that? I thought we were on the same team?

Good, as there was no reason to make a change in that department. The only reason he wouldn't have been brought back is if he didn't want to come back.

Depends how you view the situation. If you believe that all is well behind closed doors, and that there is little to no ownership meddling, then it would appear that Friedman was off base on this one, and this was just a unique way of an NHL club extending their GM.
If you believe that there is/was smoke behind closed doors, then it would appear that some fires needed to be put out before this deal could be agreed on, and in that context I would say that Friedman's comments over the last few months make sense, as well as the unusually late contract extension.

I am a big Friedman fan but he was off base on this one. Understandable that he brought the issue up, and yes it was odd that it went this long.
But Friedman was talking about it again on 960 this morning and, though he didn't have anything to report, he was going pretty hard on the 'where there's smoke' angle. So was the 960 crew. They all felt that there is a real problem in the organization.
Considering this deal was finalized mere hours later, that would suggest that Friedman was not at all in the know on this one.
|
Friedman was cranky this morning, the guys were talking about draft changes and he said he "doesn't subscribe to conspiracies", meaning if the draft reorder was last season and NJ got Matthews.
Good move for the Flames if they want stability, but even GM Sutter couldn't get them past the first round on paper.

This is huge, I'm very excited.
I had no idea who Treliving was when he was hired except for being Jim Trelivings kid. My buddy and I saw him at Cowboys that summer shortly after the 2014 draft, and as the big Flames fans we were we approached him to say hi and welcome to the city. What ensued was a half hour convo about the draft, some players on the roster and just the team in general. The guy could not have been nicer, probably just wanted to drink some beer and relax after a busy period but took time out to talk to us randoms.
I'm ecstatic that Treliving is the face of our franchise management now, it's been very clear to me over the last three years that he's a well spoken straight laced guy who will bust his ass for our team and represent us with class.

You have to be reasonably good all the time and occasionally amazing.

No one is writing it off... but one has to admit that there were potentially reasons for the slow start:
1) New Team
2) New Head Coach
3) New System
4) New DMan Pairing
5) New Everything outside of the rink
In all fairness to Elliott everyone on the team looked bad...
So, he did look bad, but that bad was understood by most with an asterisk as a result of all of the above...
The playoff performance is definitely concerning however, and he definitely deserves criticism for how bad he looked... the coaching staff were also to blame for this lack of preparedness.

Wel that's CP or maybe anonymous message boards in general. No matter what happened the I told you so crowd would be out in full force.
I'm glad he's signed. He is a competent GM and seems real bright. Does he have a plan for turning this team into a champion? I can't tell but continuity is important and I'm not convinced another GM would be appreciably better.
I'm expecting a major trade or signing this summer. Treliving is maybe ready to take bigger chances.

Given Treliving's negotiating skills, I'm expecting the Flames to have gotten hosed on this

I think this just goes to show how tight lipped the flames management is. The media really had no clue and just speculated a bunch of what ifs because they had no clue.

So people who thought he would sign all along were right; people who thought there was trouble in Flamesland were also right; everybody wins!

Good to have Tre in the fold. I agree with Burke that this is important for continuity sake. Hope he can continue to improve the team.

To top it off, and not many know this, he and his wife had baby 5 games into the season. The actual due date was on Game one. I can't imagine how this would effect a regular player let alone a goalie. I'm not making excuses for him but I think the "New Family" issue could have played a small part as well.
As for the playoffs, I haven't got a clue....

i didn't know that...
it makes sense though, as by the time a player gets to UFA, its not just him switching teams; its the entire family moving and leaving their support systems behind... as you say, if you have children it can make it more difficult... a newborn in a brand new city would make it more challenging.
so again its not defending his playoff performance... that was really poor by any standard...but there was a transition at the beginning of the year - the team took longer than one would like, but they did turn it around enough to make the playoffs...
