Unfortunately this is probably going to the case. The IOC has been taking such a big PR hit over the last several Olympics that they probably see a """""budget""""" Games hosted in a nice, passive, soft country like Canada as a way to recover some of their reputation. Not like the IOC has ever given a #### about putting countries in debt before now, why stop with us?
Christ forbid FIFA ends up doing the same thing to us with the World Cup. We'll get to be the next Brazil, won't that be nice?

Rude and uncalled for.
It's more like 99.99999997%.
|
Is he wrong? You'll be extremely hard pressed to find someone who is okay with the arena being funded 100% by the city, which is that statement implies. 50% would even be hard pressed.

I'm certainly not defending Bettman but did he ever say the city should fund 100%? If so I must have missed that.

Not much point talking about CalgaryNEXT. It's for all intents and purposes, dead. I believe it's how Plan B comes together or not. I think it gets done.

Comes across? He is what he is. I'll give him props for being a smart guy but his arrogance is getting up to Trump territory. I believe his popularity right now is at an all time low and outside of doing nothing creative but raise taxes every year, the way he conducts himself on twitter and in the media has weaned off the people that were on the fence with him. A little more professionalism would be welcome but it's pretty evident he's a narcissist.

CalgaryNext is a bad idea, but maybe Nenshi could at least once keep his mouth shut, let the proper processes take place, and work in good faith?

It's interesting and disappointing the city hasn't told CSEC where the City stands on Plan B, despite assurances they would. CSEC has no idea what the City even wants or will do.

Calgarynext should be dead unless the Flames want to move to a new building in 10 years. They're totally underestimating the amount of time needed to clean up the site. Just a really bad idea from the start.

Wasn't it $200million? I mean...I don't mean to pile on here, but you are highlighting how hard it is to get a project like this off the ground when people voice their opinion on it based on emotion and not fact.

Well it is $200M for the Fieldhouse and $240M from a CRL (so deferred property taxes) so you're at just under half a billion without taking into account all the other costs that the city would need to take on as a part of the project like remediation, transportation changes (upgrades, road re-routing, dealing with the location being on the less ideal transit line, etc) and you're easily over half a billion in public commitment.
