Hate to agree but with a 46 billion dollar debt I don't see it happening either.

There's no room in there to build an arena of that size. The Stampede already plans to expand the BMO Centre into the gap next to the Casino. They also have plans to tear down the Corral and Boyce Theatre and build additional exhibition space there too. The BMO Centre is only going to get larger, not smaller.
The Grain Academy takes up a tiny amount of space on the second floor of the BMO Centre.

There are line ups everywhere these days. What makes an arena any different than any other popular venue? Why does the arena need public financing to alleviate line ups? For instance, have you been to a ski hill on a weekend lately? Last time I was in Revy I had the privilege of waiting for 15 minutes to use a toilet only to wait for 20 minutes to get a coffee and then wait for an hour to get on the gondola. Should the province be buying them a new lodge and lift to help with these lines? Ultimately both venues are used for entertainment to generate a profit for the owners. You all probably scoffed at the idea of a taxpayer buying a chairlift for a resort but what's the difference? Both are expensive to attend and cater to a select few. And I could make a stronger argument for the economic impact of a ski hill to a town like Revy then an arena district to a city like Calgary.
|
You don't know me very well, I'd be all for the government paying to add a new lift and open up south bowl

Rob Kerr's gurgling right now about the new arena. Hate to agree with him but he's bang on in his assessment that this is going to keep dragging on indefinitely. I also agree that the Stamps will be left in the dust.

And once again, after hearing Nenshi's bit on the radio, re-confirms my opinion of him being such an arrogant ahole. Guy just simply can't resist talking down to people any chance he gets.

Yeah Nenshi's clip was extremely negative. I went from thinking that something will get decided to feeling like this will never happen - as long as Nenshi is mayor at least.

Doubt Nenshi slows this down at all. He just a pompous ass and wants everyone to know he's in charge.

It's probably because he is smarter than 99.9% of the population. When you deal with people all the time like Bettman who wants to spend his and my money on a building for the benefit of billionaire owners he probably gets a little ticked off.
He should talk down to those people. Bettman doesn't give a crap about Calgary, why should the mayor respect him or not totally call a spade a spade?
You really think Bettman wants an arena in Calgary so we could have a higher quality of life?

That hasn't stopped cities before, why would Calgary be any different? Everyone is in debt.

He said 99.99997% of the city's population doesn't want a publicly funded arena.
Rude and uncalled for.
It's more like 99.99999997%.

There's a story floating around that until the Mayor got caught in the Uber video Justin Trudeau had him pegged for Canadian ambassador to the UN.

That position actually suits his style better than being Mayor. He'd be good in that role.

I respectfully decline. He's been called much worse by others. And deservedly so. Scan up a few.

Why would what he said in the uber video matter? He spoke the truth and was looking out for the best interests of the city of Calgary. If anything that video should have been a positive in people's eyes except for people who just hate him for the sake of hating him. Mr hate face.

Lol, well you're clearly not biased but what does that have to do with the arena?

Highly, highly doubt Nenshi was being considered as Canada's ambassador to the UN, but that uber video did him no favours...came off like a pompous jerk. #truecolours
