Agreed. My experience in Rogers Arena was similar to the Dome. You still have long beer lines and long bathroom queues. They were shorter, but negligible.

This isn't an argument for a new building just a reply to someone who called another post hyperbole.

I do smoke and drink. Every intermission, I wait 3 or 4 mins and watch the kids game, head for to one of two washrooms I use, have a smoke, and hit a beer vendor on the way back (cash no lines). All in 13 minutes.

I'm not 100% sure that will be the case when Calgary builds a new rink, but the cynic in me says that the focus of the new rink will be on the customers that pay the premium prices.

This just sucks for Edmonton then.

Not all new rinks are the same, but games I've seen in newer buildings literally have no lines. Arizona gets an asterisk as it wasn't full, but the Kings game I saw was full, Brooklyn was full.

Maybe Albertans drink too much!

Have to admit, if I don't gain convenience then a new arena is way less of a wish.

Haven't seen a game yet at Roger's, but attended a concert in the upper bowl.
The concourse and the location are much better than Rexall. We stayed at the Delta downtown and walked over, and also walked to a nearby pub.

Sight-lines are no better than Rexall or the Saddledome though. Still long lineups for beer and bathroom. Exiting down the escalator was a huge traffic jam.

The Lower Bowl at Rogers is a huge upgrade on Rexall for what its worth. Plus loge seating and all that.

I imagine the same will happen for Calgary. Marginal if any increase to the game experience for the upper bowl fans. Big increase for the lower bowl.

I’m not sure if the Montreal game was extra busy or more beer consumption (ie: more bathroom breaks) or both but I have the bathroom/beer process nailed down and I missed the start of the second period that night. The concourse was a zoo and reminded me of a playoff game (which is 10x worse then a typical regular season game).

Did a quick mockup as I have a question about the location of the new arena. Would this be fairly accurate or would it be a bit further north? Threw in a stadium too because as a Stamps STH I hate McMahon - I'm sure this would never happen. |

Yes, that's the general area that's being discussed. Basically between 12th and 14th Avenues and 4th and 5th Streets.
The stadium wouldn't fit there though. If they were going to consider Stampede Park for a stadium, it would probably make the most sense to replace the Grandstand with it.

I could see keeping the dome around for Stampede events for CalgaryNEXT plan A, but for plan B I don't see the point in keeping the dome around with a new building next to it.

what if they put the new arena where the corral and the grain academy & museum currently is. for the exhibition space you lose build onto the NE side of BMO (between BMO and Cowboys) to repalce that footage. Someone may have mocked it up but if not can it be shown? I think this would be ideal

What would be the point? There would be costs to adjust BMO centre to accommodate it. It seems cheaper to start with pretty much a blank slate at the parking lot location.

Flames owners aren't getting that, so that's not in their best interest. The only parking revenue they would get would be the parkade connected to the arena.

What Olympics lol. Did you just see the NDP budget? Olympics are all but dead after that. No money for it.
