We are lucky to have Pinder and Steinbeauty on Calgary sports radio.
Entertainment wise, Boomer and Warrener have a great shtick going on the morning show (however intentionally/unintentionally lowbrow it ends up being).

Was his contract terminated due to smuggling drugs?
IIRC Richards left because most of his go to guys he had as regulars were TSN guys and Sportsnet big wigs told him no to the TSN guys so he left.

Actually if it takes Jim Rome off the air then sign me up. At least the more annoying guy will be talking about the Flames somewhat.

I like the Jim Rome show. I get that some of you don't but there are sports fans in Calgary that follow sports outside of the NHL and Blue Jays.

I used to love Rome in the early 2000s but hadn't heard him in forever. Were the clones always that heavily used, or do I just have bad timing tuning in? It feels like it's 50/50 I'm gonna get smack-off time when I listen.
I like Rome but I HATE the clones. I listen to that show to hear sports talk and Rome's dry sarcasm, not some random Midwest slob reading something off a page trying to burn some other dud while doing a Rome impression. I find it crying-worthy, I actually feel kind of embarrassed for those guys. I feel like he leans on that stuff way too much lately.

You can live stream on the sports net app and website. Pod casts are up usually by 10 am.

I follow a lot more than the Flames and Blue Jays and Jim Rome is still trash in my eyes.
If you like old men repeating themselves over and over maybe we can get you to spend some time with my grandpa who has dementia. You guys would spend all day talking about how much better you are as a person because you follow other sports which clearly heightens your taste.

I used to enjoy Rome from time to time. He would have some pretty epic takes on athletes/teams/sports and just go off on these hilarious rants.
But he started to suck when he became self obsessed and his show became about self aggrandizement and was 2 hours straight of Jim Rome talking about Jim Rome and his stupid clones.

Isn't that American sports talk in a nutshell though? Everything trending to the argumentative grandstanding and "hot takes". That's essentially the reason Jay & Dan got axed from fox sports; nobody appreciated their creative, humerous approach. Not enough yelling.
I also used to enjoy Rome back when 960 first started but now I can take or leave it.
As for Richards, that ship has sailed. Enjoyed his time on my radio but always got the Impression Calgary was a stopover until he got back to the big smoke. We've all moved on since then. Current guys have their flaws but you can't deny they have hit their stride and have a consistent product.

Rhett is ok imo. Tbh I think that he rarely offers any insight into the game though. The whole group lets him off easy everytime they ask a question that he might be able to give an insiders view on. He rarely answers the question and it is swept under the rug swiftly and they carry on.

I personally love the Morning Show and listen to the podcast regularly but I think Rhett is on strictly for humor and chemistry.
When he does analyze a game in-depth its great and he seems to have some great chemistry with the other former NHL guests in recent years. I loved his interaction with Sarich a while back, that was great.
960 as a whole doesn't do a good enough job with getting enough different media guy's providing their own insights. It's always the same group I find where as when I listen to TSN 1040, they get a lot of different view points on different NHL teams as well.

Rome talks sports? If I happen to have it on while I'll driving all I ever hear him do is make inside jokes and quips, and read comments from his sycophantic listeners who are trying to break into comedy.

Yes he talks plenty of sports. I have to wonder how many of you actually listen and how many just take the stereotype and run with it? The clones are rarely part of the show compared to say ten years ago. He's got an entire 3 hours to kill every morning so you can understand that he's going to have some jokes and quips as well as read emails from listeners. Besides isn't jokes and quips the entire basis of Onrait and O'Toole?
I hate to break it to you folks but thousands of north American radio sports broadcasters have come and gone and crashed and burned so becoming the largest syndicated sports radio show is no accident. I understand in Calgary where the average fan has a very narrow bandwidth of sports they are interested in that he may not be popular with a lot of people but as a guy that has 960 on all day in his cubicle he's pretty well my only source of current events in other sports like the NBA which I only follow very casually. I get pretty tired of Boomer's comments when Pinder brings up a current story in say tennis to which you get; "Tennis? Who cares, lets talk about when Freddie Hamilton will get back into the Flames lineup." Boomer has absolutely nothing to offer outside of hockey talk. Nothing. Mike Richards at least was into baseball, football, boxing, etc and the morning show was much more well rounded. The morning show is better after 9:00 when he leaves the show IMO.
Things are only going to get worse once the NHL playoffs are over and we have a full hour at noon of that baseball show where I'm convinced if you were to listen every minute from beginning to end may induce a coma.

Oddly enough, i've been listening to an Unsolved Murder Podcast (Somebody Knows Something on CBC) and Mike Richards popped up in it. Not part of the murder or anything like that, but part of the event that got the whole sequence of events started.

He rarely ever talks sports and if he does, he will repeat himself 200 times and play the same clip 50 times. So he might get around to two sports stories in 2 hours.
I get he's popular but if people like Estrada actually listen to him for sports news then they must come out very uninformed because he's not the show you listen to for sports.
Read the ESPN website for 5 minutes while you're taking a crap and you'll get more sports information than listening to the Rome show for a week.

CBS Sports radio doesn't have a lot to offer. Their best show is the late late night one with the lady whose name I can't remember at the moment. I assume that Rogers went with CBS because they were the cheapest available.
Put me in the listened to Rome in 2005 camp. Now its one of the worst talk shows on the air, almost a parody of itself. His interviews are still good, but the 50 minutes of filler in every hour gives me nothing but anxiety. I generally turn the channel now when it comes on.
I don't think that Richards would take a mid-morning show, but two hours of him (or three and push the noon show) talking about things other than hockey would be a big step in the right direction, whether you personally like his shtick or not.
