I wouldn't want to lose him in the expansion draft, and I would probably protect him over Brower. But seriously, he is not a superstar and it's not like he is on the verge of a hall of fame career. I think the best case scenario for him is to have a Bourque-like career with similar streaks of goodness with other stretches of mediocrity.

Was posting regarding Ferland's hits, not his goal scoring prowess. With that being said, I do think that Ferland has more goal scoring upside than he has shown historically, and this season he is proving it. Not all players develop at the same pace, and I see Ferland as someone that is growing his game. He always had a really good shot, and he used it in scoring 47 goals in the WHL. He is starting to really round out his game this season, and who knows how much more there is? Time will tell.
He is for sure a guy you protect.

Brouwer, Stajan, or Bouma. One of them needs to be taken.
I don't care how it happens but that's what I want.

Time for poll which Flame counts as LV pick selected at draft or signed prior to
Now that Flames roster is set for remainder of season. I think it is time to do the first poll to see whom amongst Flames organization players we will lose to LV in expansion by either being:
selected in expansion draft (June 21)
or
signed prior to draft since unprotected UFA or RFA (June 19-21).
I would include everyone eligible in the poll outside of the "untouchable" core group of: Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Backlund, Frolik, Giordano, Hamilton, Brodie. Since I think we are virtually 100% certain all these core players will be protected.
I think there is sufficient uncertainty (regarding decision to protect or resign prior to June 19th) to include all other active roster players in the poll:
Ferland, Lazar, Brouwer, Stajan, Bouma, Chiasson, Versteeg, Stone, Engelland, Bartkowski, Wideman, Elliott and Johnson as possible selection/signing that could count as the LV selection. In addition to the eligible Stockton 3rd year or more players that could be selected/signed.
Would be interesting how many of us are already settled on Brouwer ending up as most likely to be LV bound?
Also interesting to see which five players are polled highest to end up in LV?
We will likely end up repeating the poll another couple times as expansion draft approaches but that is okay.

Ferland can be a sniper, but I think what will really complete his game is a little Ryan Smyth. Guy needs to score more garbage goals in front of the net. I can't remember any garbage goals from Ferland. When he's not blowing up defensemen in the corner or cycling the puck around for his teammates, he needs to get to the front of the net.

If Lazar has a strong finish to the season, it is definitely possible that he gets added to the protection list instead of Brouwer. I would think right now, the forward list is:
Gaudreau
Monahan
Bennett
Backlund
Frolik
Ferland
Brouwer
Lazar.
And the door would be open for Lazar to move up if he can earn it.

Maybe my math is worse than yours but I count 8 there, one of those would have to be exposed. Unless you are exposing all of Gio, Brodie and Hamilton.
Edit: ohhhh I think I misunderstood your post, nm.

Listening to Treliving yesterday in his press conference, he's expecting to keep both Stone and Lazar beyond the expansion draft. Stone is an easy one because he's UFA so I'd presume that'll get done but Lazar is interesting when Ferland's recent production is factored in, along with Brouwer's need to be protected.
I don't see Brouwer being left unprotected because I think he's been a good (not great) pickup, with potential playoffs still around for him to show his value, so it'll be interesting to see what happens before the draft.
I think Treliving will make a deal with Vegas to ensure the guys he wants to keep don't get picked up without having to necessarily put them on the protected list.

This. I think Treliving will send Vegas a draft pick so they take Bouma/Stajan over Brouwer/Lazar.

I believe LV will more likely pick young guys with potential than vets (you'll need some vets. if you leave a lazar or ferland unprotected it is an easy choice off calgary. If you leave brouwer, there are other vets that are available that will offer the same skill set and they likelihood of him being picked is reduced overall compared to the lazar and ferland.

I think Brad "the Process" Treliving will make it seem like he is going to keep Brouwer, and then he will accept a asset (something small, not major) from Las Vegas in order to expose Brouwer and protect Lazar (which is what he wants to do anyways).

There is no need to protect Brouwer. Its not going to effect future free agents coming to Calgary if you expose him. Do you really think a free agent is going to look at the Flames and think about Brouwer being exposed in an expansion draft as part of their decision?
At what point are you allowed to expose a guy after you sign him? They signed Bouma the summer before Brouwer - are they able to expose him without hurting their value with FA?
And Lazar is going to get protected. You don't trade a 2nd round pick for a guy to just let him be picked in an expansion draft.

I agree fully. Business is business. Brouwer should not be protected. Much less certain LV would take him even if unprotected given 4.5 million salary. So reasonable chance we dont lose him anyways.
Time for a poll everyone! I dont know how to create one. I presume only the moderators can do it?

Agreed, although I think Frolik is a better example than Bouma (came from another team). It's a ridiculous sentiment.

All I can get

The Golden Knights are going to stock up on younger depth players, occasionally taking a flier on a few reclamation projects. Veteran leadership can come from the free agent market.
They'll turn around and trade some of those depth players to fill out their other needs. I also imagine they'll be very active in the undrafted juniors/college/Euro market.
The Flames they'd be looking at are likely are one of Bouma, Kulak or Shinkaruk.
The McPhee/Brouwer connection is interesting though.

I still think Vegas signs Engelland before the expansion draft and that could get as their pick from the flames.

And why wouldn't they just sign him after the draft?

Yeah, not sure why the Knights would do the Flames a solid by signing him early. Just like the Flames will hopefully sign Stone after the draft to screw over them.

if they really want him they may want to lock him up before anyone else not named Calgary can.
