Generally a second round pick can fetch a pretty decent player in return.

Sutter used to pull that off with regularity. Rene Bourque, now there's a great trade for a second round pick.

I don't know why you'd want to set the bar at Lance Bouma as a win. You can trade for a Lance Bouma tomorrow with a 6th rounder.

You'd think you would set a decently high bar for expected return on a second rounder. Why are you setting the standard so low?
If we bundled it with a first we could have gotten a Griffin Reinhart.

Captain Crunch im the first post I responded to.

He said if Lazar can be an effective forechecker and half decent defensively it's a win for the Flames.

That's a pretty low bar to set IMO.

Yeah. That's an example of how not to trade high picks.

Shouldn't really be one to make that comment, Mr. "20-Goal-Scorers in the 2nd Round"

Edit - nevermind, I see Wills updating the lines and Lazar is an extra
No point tinkering with a winning lineup. Chiasson has played well during this stretch too. Give Lazar some more practice time and have him watch the team from the pressbox for some more learning.

Lazar shouldn't be given anything at this time of the year. Next year, you might give him more leeway and preferential treatment.

@Kristen_Odland: Gulutzan indicated that Curtis Lazar won't play tomorrow vs. Detroit.

Makes sense. Guy needs to learn the system.

We've seen how this team does when they don't follow the system to a tee.

Makes sense - he is still familiarizing himself with the Flames systems etc. But players like Bouma and Chiasson better bring their game or they could soon find themselves sitting.

You don't give up a second rounder for forechecking and decent without the puck. That's Lance Bouma.

Lazar will need to be an above average third liner for this to be a win IMO, because you can get an average third liner for free from free agency.

Can he be that player? Maybe.
Except through free agency, we would end up having to pay upwards of 2.5 mil.

Let him gain confidence back in practice and go from there. Boucher seemed like the worst coach for him, he needs a player coach like Gully who won't tear him a new one for everything he does wrong. Boucher is like Hartley, and that style of coaching is not good for some players especially younger guys. It seemed when watching Lazar that he was so worried at making a mistake and getting chewed out by Boucher that he lost his game that got him to the NHL. That's just my opinion tho, he might just not be that good but obviously the Flames feel like they can develop him better, and after seeing how they've developed Ferland I don't see why they can't do the same with Lazar if he actually had the talent scouts thought he had prior to the draft. It's all up to him, really can't be any excuses from him here.

You can get an average third liner from free agency but you have to overpay dramatically to do that. You are better served to develop one internally.
Flawed logic.
No you do not have to overpay - nobody is forcing anyone. GMs historically overpaying does not mean everyone has to. A poor excuse. Value is there to be had.

Paul Byron $1,166,667
Viktor Stalberg $1,500,000
Kris Versteeg $950,000
PA Parenteau $1,250,000
Patrick Eaves $1,000,000
Sam Gagner $650,000

All good-value signings of various degrees and easily identified prior to free agency (aside from Byron who wasn't a free agent but who the Flames in their hands). Thankfully the Flames picked up on Versteeg.

Kristen Odland @Kristen_Odland
From Gulutzan's scrum, the impression I took away was that they don't want to rush Lazar into the lineup. Wasn't playing big minutes in Ott.

Boucher was playing him under 9 mins a night, when he dressed. So yeah wasn't seeing much ice.

I don't think him being an extra forward has much to do with Lazar or the minutes or playing or anything. I just don't think it would be right for the coaches to drop so a guy out of a line up that is on a winning streak.

It is patently false to say that trading a second rounder should bring back an impact top nine player or it is a bad trade. That's ridiculous. Even first round picks are more likely to bust than to become that. I don't follow Edmonton's prospects. You guys must have some second round picks ripping up the NHL, you'll have to remind me.

It's quite remarkable actually, they get McDavid and now they get to judge how other teams operate. When's the last time the Oilers found a real gem in the later rounds? It's funny I remember hearing the Oil commentators compare Caggiula to Johnny, idiots.

Awesome, so you took one person's quote, construed your own meaning and then felt the need to lecture the entire forum based on it. That doesn't seem like your typical troll-esque schtick at all.
