Yeah that sounds like it's just being floated as another distraction from what should be the real focus, his mental fitness and Russia. It's also why I'm convinced his number one goal this weekend with his rally is try and provoke a riot between protesters and his people. Massive distraction, plus possible sympathy garnering attempt.

Geez... you think this will happen? Wow... Maybe we should, like, build a wall or something?

If its not true that may anger his remaining supporters. They probably loved the idea.

Is enforcing existing laws facism?
Was Obama deporting more immigrants than any other president facism?
If these actions are conducted against citizens I would agree with you but really this is jus an impractical solution to a problem that the US has been feeling with poorly for decades.

I'm not sure if you were joking but I suspect this is exactly right. Can you tell if the AP's story is legit or not? The AP is a fairly reliable source, but honestly, I have no idea whether or not to believe that story. I wouldn't even be surprised if administration sources are deliberately misinforming reporters so that they can call the ensuing reports fake. Their whole campaign to frustrate people into indifference about what's real is proceeding nicely.

Could also be part of the "mole hunt" that the administration is supposedly conducting.
Give different stories to different staffers and see which ones surface in the media.

Oh I was being serious. The AP has a draft memo of the order, so there is at least some truth to what they are saying, but Trump and co do like floating things just to gauge public reaction, so it may be something they wanna do, but want to test the waters first. There's also some suggesting this was an attempt to flush out the leaker by putting this out there. But that of course assumes there's only one leaker which seems highly unlikely.

Good point... Of course in any other administration this would be absolutely insane to suggest, but the scope of what's plausible here is so broad that even stuff like this gets the reaction of "well, maybe."

In a vacuum I might agree with you but you enforce laws with police. Using the context of the Republican administration's words and actions so far it's hard to see the mobilisation of the national guard for an Oregon to Louisiana rounding up of "illegals" as only enforcing existing laws. The same national guard that has previously only assisted with operations on the border? This isn't rocket appliances to see why one would see this (potential) action as a problem.

I think you're both giving the leaky administration way too much credit. As seen on Twitter
"What a move! Is he a chess champion?"
"No. He's literally gnawing on the pieces"

See, I go back and forth on this too. There's less and less to be completely sure of with this administration. I mean you listen to him and you wonder how he can tie his shoes, but then you read Kasparov dissect these decisions and explain their effect in terms of an authoritarian's basic playbook and much of it does seem to have a purpose. It's seriously not clear how much of it the apparent incompetence is deliberate.

I read an article in the new York times yesterday postulating that one of the problems Trump was having was the inability to force staffers around him to sign NDAs, and that for a guy deathly afraid of public humiliation, these leaks are weighing in him heavily. That Trump's press conference that went completely off the rails was an attempt by Trump to reassert control over the perception of him and his administration after his Public spokes people and Twitter have been ineffective at changing the perception of his bumbling administration.
Mitch McConnell further speculated that Trump's approval record wouldn't be so dismal if he could bring himself to stick to the script. For McConnell to say that publicly I think points to to two things 1) that there is friction between Republicans and Trump and 2) that McConnell is laying the groundwork to appear in opposition to Trump for the eventual impeachment
