Berglund, Kulikov and maybe Duclair would be good value trade targets for the Flames I think.

I would be tempted to make a Bennett for Duchene deal depending on the other pieces involved. My rationale is as follows
- I think Duchene has elite talent
- I think the Avs are weird and as a result weird things happen to otherwise good players. Too many examples of this
- i think Duchene has a good head on his shoulder and just needs a chance somewhere else

So depending on the price, I'm for exploring it.

Disagree!

Duchene is 26 making $6M and when he is 28 he is going to want another 6-8 year deal at similar or more money

Sam Bennett is likely going to get a $2-$3M per bridge for a couple years. Hopefully in that time he proves to be the player the Flames hoped for when they drafted him. Then signing a 22-23 year old to a $6M long term deal is far more appealing than a 28 year old.

Flames make a move like this when they are pushing for the division not a playoff spot.

Having said that I would be willing to part with a collection of lesser assets like picks and prospects to land Duchene or Landeskog.

With a weak draft coming up I am fine with the Flames 1st in play for an impact forward.

I would disagree on this and definitely be willing to trade Bennett right now if it means acquiring Duchene.

To Colorado:
Sam Bennett

Kylington/Anderson
Matt Stajan (cap purposes)

Holy Christ, that is an awful overpayment. Duchene is good, not great... his numbers aren't amazing... maybe that's because of Colorado. But I wouldn't make that trade on a 'maybe'.

Fair enough but personally I think Calgary regrets that deal big time in as soon as a years time and could be catastrophic in 3 years

This. Itt Keenan77 confuses duchene for Nate mackinnon. I am all for acquiring duchene as I think he has some of the best mitts in the league, but not for bennett, and certainly not for bennett a first and kylington/Andersen??? Wth.

That's fair but this is my reasoning:

I looked at the Ryan O'Reilly Trade... Personally, I think Duchene is a much better player and frankly, you need to give up good assets if you want to acquire a first line center.

To Colorado:
Nikita Zadorov
JT Compher
Mikhail Grigorenko
2nd Round Pick

To Buffalo:
Ryan O'Reilly
Jamie McGinn

---------------------
Compher = Kylington/Anderson
Grigorenko = 1st Round Pick
Zadorov + 2nd = Bennett

Frankly, this to me looks like a swap between Bennett and Duchene... I personally think Colorado wouldn't be interested in that at all.

You could argue that Duchene has a little more offensive upside, but he is not a much better player than O'Reilly. In fact they have been almost identical for a few years now offensively (both on bad teams) except O'Reilly is tasked with much more responsibility and is a far better defensive player than Duchene.

I don't want to get into a battle to gauge Bennett's value as that has been done lots already on the board.

However, I would really like to hear your reasoning on the Andersson/Kylington vs Compher comparison. Or is this one of those scenarios where Flames fans are over valuing their own players?

Disagree. Half the game is played without the puck, and O'Reilly is a much better defensive forward than Duchene.

It's no coincidence that Colorado fell apart after they moved out Stastny and O'Reilly - two top-notch two way centres - and essentially replaced them with two flashier forwards who aren't nearly as good without the puck.

I would argue that Duchene has just been in a ####ty situation with Colorado over the past few years. Just my opinion, but I think in the right situation (playing with a guy like Gaudreau), he can become an 80+ point player. He has the speed and the hands to finish off plays that Gaudreau can make.

However, I would really like to hear your reasoning on the Andersson/Kylington vs Compher comparison. Or is this one of those scenarios where Flames fans are over valuing their own players?

If prospects are close at all in value then I take the defencemen over the winger every time. Defencemen are a much more valuable commodity in general compared to wingers. Prospect dmen who have top 4 potential I take every day over wingers with 2nd line potential. Wing is the least important position in the game. Defencemen are one of the most valuable commodities in the game and one of the hardest to trade for.

Simple as that

I don't think the Flames need to make a splash for an expensive forward like Duchene. Are his 50-60 pts over Bennett's 30 taking this team to the promised land?

I think a new coach who can maximize the value of the current talent is more important. Good goaltending is the most important. Look at what Talbot has done for the Oilers.

This year the Flames shed Wideman + Engelland (re-sign cheaper) + Chiasson + Bollig + Smid + Elliot. Pipe dream is the Flames expose Brouwer and he's taken by LV.
Next year the Flames shed Stajan + Bouma

That's tons of dead weight removed, and 2 more years of experience for Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Tkachuk, Hamilton, Ferland, and whoever makes the club next year (Jankowski, Andersson). If the Flames are making a push at that time, then they can make a splash for a big named player.
