because it IS terrible. Does the whacking and slashing have to stop? Absolutely. Is Gaudreau swinging his stick and aiming for people's faces the answer? Hell no.

Here's what I posted in the other thread:
This, to me, is a product of today's NHL. 10 years ago Nyquist would get pissed off by a cross check and then turn around and start cross checking back, until both guys threw down like men. Both get majors and play resumes. You turn around to fight and risk losing the puck battle, but back then both guys fought.
Now, Nyquist can't fight but still carries that pent up desire so he retaliates. It's dangerous because Spurgeon can lose an eye right there. Nobody is happy about taking a stick to the back when you're after the puck, so I see where Nyquist is coming from, but it sucks Spurg can't take his helmet off in a fight, and if Nyquist turns around to cross check he loses the puck. So he throws a quick stick swing to defend himself and it goes too high, catching Spurg in the nose.

Another made up argument brought to you by "back in my days" old man.
That didn't happen 10 years ago so please don't pretend you were the only one watching hockey 10 years ago.

Are you kidding me? 10 years ago there was at least one fight a game, and one line brawl a season. Where EVERYONE on the bench left to fight the other bench.
You obviously didn't watch hockey then, but are just pretending to have. Or you're suffering from a memory condition

That's a hilarious explanation of the in person hearing. "It means more than five games, however they could give him less, but they can give more as well".

Nobody said that? I'm saying 10 years ago Nyquist would've fought Spurg, not swung his stick at him.

Without researching that one I think I can safely remember that bench clearing brawls didn't happen on a yearly basis as recently as ten years ago.

Why does the thread title say 'accidental'? Looked pretty on purpose and vicious to me. Hopefully it will be a double digit suspension but I'm sure the wheel of justice will land on something like 6 games.

I mean look at the retaliation from the Wild, it's bloody pathetic. Your boy just got a face full of stick and guys aren't swinging. They're just standing around huddling really.

A guy like Nyquist never would have fought. In fact twenty years ago a lot of the so called justice was delivered with stick work.

Guys like Shanahan and Simon had stick-swinging incidents after getting frustrated. Pretty sure they weren't afraid to drop the gloves. Even pre-instigator rule there were incidents (Ciccarelli). It's always going to be a problem until everyone wears full face shields.

Yeah whatever. We know you don't like fighting and your memory of old time hockey is jaded.
But even Gretzky fought. You poke and prode even the most disciplined monks in the world you can eventually get them to go caveman. Humans are ecological. We come from the animal Kingdom.

Violent slashing and spearing has been happening in this league since the beginning. If anything, it happens less now, as players will more likely be disciplined for it.

I remember when Gretzky fought. It was basically because for a short time he was being criticized for never standing up for himself and letting others fights. So he fought the easiest opponent he could find (it might have been Bozek) and got beaten up.

So what? He was poked to do it. He was so good that little could frustrate him. He danced around everyone and put up super human points, so how pissed off could he be when he's hugging teammates twice a period from all the goals being scored?
Usually frustration on the ice stems from more than the physical stuff. Not sleeping. Being on the road. Being pointless for so long. Stuff like that

It's ugly and if Spurgeon lost a couple teeth and got stitches, it'd easily be 25 games, but considering he somehow came away with just a bruise, he'll get 11 games (my guess). The NHL looks at the damage in these situations, and given there was somehow none, and Nyquist has no history, he'll get off a bit easy (deservedly so IMO).

Prior to the '90's this is exactly how star players would buy time and space out on the ice.
Not saying it is right, but the star players are getting keyed on with these little slashes on the hands over and over again, and the league seems disinterested in protecting the star/skilled players, so eventually they are going to take matters into their own hands. Most the star/skilled players have never fought anyone and they also don't want to risk injuring their money makers (hands), so it results in stick swinging incidents.
So when I say I wouldn't mind Gaudreau doing something similar, it's because the league isn't doing their job and protecting the players so he has to stick up for himself and he isn't going to fight anyone.
Would anyone here hesitate to have Duncan Keith on their team?

I know I wouldn't regardless of this, and you know guys are thinking about these incidents everytime they go into the corner with him and it probably buys him and extra split second from time to time.
